Hardware/Mechatronics Engineer

Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada OpTalent Full time

OpTalent is representing a high-growth technology organization that designs and delivers mission-critical automation platforms deployed within regulated aviation and air-transportation environments. These systems operate at scale in high-traffic public facilities, where reliability, compliance, and performance are essential.

This role is ideal for a senior, hands-on engineer who thrives on building real-world hardware systems—from early architecture and prototyping through certification, production, and global deployment.

About the Role

You will join a multidisciplinary product engineering team responsible for developing electromechanical systems used in aviation and transportation infrastructure, supporting high-volume, security-sensitive user interactions.

Working closely with software, firmware, industrial design, manufacturing, and operations teams, you will take ownership of hardware and system-level decisions across the full product lifecycle. As a senior contributor, you will lead technical initiatives, influence platform direction, and help scale solutions deployed globally in regulated environments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and integrate electromechanical subsystems for new and existing automated platforms

  • Lead hands-on prototyping and iterative development through validation and refinement cycles

  • Define and execute verification and validation strategies; analyze results and drive design improvements

  • Own system-level integration across hardware, firmware, sensors, and software interfaces

  • Create and maintain technical documentation including specifications, assembly procedures, and service documentation

  • Act as an escalation point for complex hardware issues across development, production, and field deployments

  • Participate in design reviews with a focus on reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, and lifecycle performance

  • Plan and manage regulatory testing and compliance activities (safety, electrical, emissions, etc.)

  • Develop, maintain, and manage Bills of Materials (BoMs) across multiple product configurations

  • Support manufacturing readiness, pilot builds, production handover, and early deployment phases

  • Collaborate with suppliers and contract manufacturers on component selection, sourcing strategies, and alternatives

  • Provide technical guidance and knowledge transfer to production and operations teams

  • Occasionally develop scripts or lightweight automation tools to support system-level testing and diagnostics

Experience & Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Computer Engineering

  • 7+ years of experience delivering physical products in product development or systems engineering roles

  • Proven experience working on hardware systems deployed in aviation, airport infrastructure, transportation, or other regulated public environments

  • Strong system-level understanding of hardware–software integration

  • Ability to read, interpret, and develop electrical and mechanical schematics

  • Experience selecting electrical and mechanical components with an emphasis on durability, uptime, and long service life

  • Familiarity with embedded hardware architectures, including power management, I/O, peripherals, and sensors

  • Working knowledge of Python, C/C++, or similar languages for hardware interaction or testing is an asset

  • Highly organized, self-directed, and comfortable owning complex technical challenges

  • Thrive in fast-paced, hands-on engineering environments

  • Proficient in Windows-based development environments; Linux experience is a plus

Work Environment & Location
  • Full-time, on-site role based in Richmond Hill, Ontario

  • Flexibility for occasional remote work depending on project needs

  • Periodic on-site support and deployment travel, both domestic and international

  • Expected travel: approximately 10–20%

Why Join
  • Work on globally deployed automation systems within aviation and air-transportation environments

  • Build hardware that operates continuously in secure, regulated, high-availability settings

  • Join a senior engineering team focused on real-world impact, not theoretical R&D

  • Clear growth path into senior technical leadership, systems architecture, or principal engineering roles

  • Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits package, including health, disability, retirement contributions, and performance-based incentives

  • Collaborative culture with long-term product ownership and visibility across the organization
