What you'll be doing

The Director, Credit Provision (Expected Credit Loss) System and Production, will be responsible for providing leadership and specialized expertise of managing CIBC's IFRS 9 Expected Credit Loss process.  This role will lead the development and implementation of a centralized the ECL calculation engine, manage the production system to support the ECL calculation from an end-to-end perspective, including risk data in flow, model parameters update, and downstream data feed for reporting.  In addition, this role will work closely with the rest of ECL team and other internal stakeholders, such as Model Quantification (MQ), Risk Data Management Office (RDMO), Risk Business Intelligent Office (RBIO), to drive the continuous improvements of simplifying the ECL process, automating the workflow, enabling efficiency of reporting with attribution analysis capabilities.

How you'll succeed

  • Review/analysis – Review the ECL calculation results to ensure accuracy and explain quarter over quarter changes from a more structured decomposition – such as portfolio changes, model updates, economic forecast revisions, etc.  Provide assessment of modelling overlays with discussion with model development team. Prepare quantitative analysis to support management overlays as required, including sensitivity analysis or other ad-hoc analysis.

  • Technical expertise – Coding experience to ensure understanding the implementation of ECL calculation engine and drive for continuous enhancements.  Provide capabilities for iterations, what if scenarios and trend analysis in the ECL engine. Use SQL or other software tools to support granular data analysis and automation of the workflow.

  • Process improvement – Identify opportunities to streamline processes and implement solutions to drive timely and accurate reporting and analytics. Responsible for developing project plans and implementation schedules in relation to strategic or tactical solutions for improving the end to end ECL processes within the team.

  • Reporting/documentation – Prepare ECL calculation results to support various reporting to senior risk executives, regulators and auditors. Document the list of models that are implemented in the ECL engine, including parameter models and macro models, etc.  Maintain an up-to-date process/work flow document for the ECL process. 

Who you are

  • You have strong knowledge of IFRS 9 credit modelling, with quantitative background and good programming skills, such as SAS, Python, R, SQL, etc.  You have a good understanding of the ECL calculation process and credit risk management in financial institutions.

  • You have a Bachelors degree in mathematics or statistics. A Master's or Ph.D. degree in mathematics or statistics is considered an asset.

  • You can demonstrate experience of working in financial institutions (5+years) in areas of credit risk management, credit model development, data modelling, technology system implementation and project management.

  • You are a caring and accountable leader. You're passionate about developing and growing team members abilities. You have experience providing coaching and hands on support to meet team goals.

  • You can manage multiple activities with varying complexity in a sophisticated matrix environment organization while under time constraints.
