Town of Devon Position Description
Title of Position: Assistant Pool Manager
The Lifeguard/Instructor 3 position is responsible for acting as a member of the management team as well as a shift supervisor in the operation and maintenance of the Town of Devon Outdoor Swimming Pool.
This position assists the Lifeguard/Instructor 4 with overseeing the overall operations and safety aspects of the Town pool including opening & closing procedures; scheduling pool programs and use; managing and supervising shift supervisors as well as lifeguard/instructors; communicating with Finance staff and Recreation Operators; ensuring safety requirements are met through practices and through training of staff.
The focus of this position is to learn about and become familiar with the pool operations, scheduling, staff leadership, and administration with the goal of supporting and covering for the Lifeguard/Instructor 4 position.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for assisting with the recruiting, hiring, supervising and training for all pool staff:
- Assists with interviews potential staff in coordination with Management team.
- Assist with providing mid and final staff evaluations.
- Trains staff in the operations of cleaning, mechanical equipment & chemistry of water.
- Provides guidance and supervision for staff.
- Maintains a high quality of public relations between staff & the public.
Assists with preparing and facilitating in-service training for staff throughout the summer.
Plans and implements the pool schedule including lessons, special events and public swimming so that it can be advertised in the community:
- Assists with coordinating and approving the staff schedule throughout the summer.
- Assists with scheduling, supervision & evaluation of all aquatic programs for all ages.
- Assists in the completion/finalization of the pool schedule for the summer by the beginning of May so that it can be advertised in the Community Guide.
- Ensures the promotion swimming lessons, schedules and special events as they happen.
- Makes financial decisions, in cooperation with the Pool Manager, about running lessons and continuing pool programs based on registrations or attendance.
Assists in the completion next year's pool schedule for the summer by the end of August so that it can be advertised in the spring program guide.
Ensures proper financial management throughout the season according to the budget:
- Trains staff on proper cash procedures
- Assists with deposits.
- Works with the Pool Manager to ensure that purchases are within budget.
- Ensures that staff can work with RecDesk and the Point of Sale System.
- Works with the Pool Manager and Recreation Coordinator in the preparation of budget for the following season.
Oversees staff hours and ensure they are within the yearly budget as well as hourly limitations per week.
Ensures that the pool systems are operating safely, efficiently and effectively:
- Sees to any maintenance issues that arise throughout the season.
- Works with administration and capital health to ensure proper water chemistry.
- Ensures proper opening and closing procedures are followed at the beginning and end of the season.
- Assists with the provision of sound leadership to pool staff as well as maintaining high quality relationships with Town employees, user groups, pool clientele, suppliers, contractors and Alberta Health representative.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Current NL Pool (National Lifeguard Pool) certification
- Current Intermediate First Aid, and CPR level C certification.
- Current Lifesaving Society Swimmer Instructor (SI) & Lifesaving Society Instructor (LSI) certifications.
- Courses such as Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Instructor (NLI), Lifesaving Society First Aid Instructor (FAI), SwimAbilities Instructor, Lifesaving Sport Coach Level 1, Fitness instruction, Synchronized Swimming and Diving, Lifesaving Society's Competency Level 3 or higher would be an asset.
- Swimming Pool Operator I.
- Swimming Pool Operator II would be an asset.
- Cash handling and budget experience.
Conditions of Employment:
- At least 2 years of experience in a supervisory guarding position in which you have supervised other staff.
- Experience with maintenance and operations of an outdoor pool is also an asset.
- Your current awards and certifications must be attached with your application. Proof of current certifications/awards will be required before your application can be considered or be furthered to the interview stage.
- Cash handling experience an asset.
- Satisfactory Criminal Reference and Vulnerable Persons Check must be provided prior to starting.
- Valid Class 5 Drivers License and provide a drivers' abstract on request
- Individual must have experience working independently as well as with a group.
