ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Territorial Archaeologist, the Project Assessment Archaeologist reviews and makes recommendations concerning the mitigation of heritage resource impacts resulting from land use and development projects in Nunavut.
The position requires careful analysis and evaluation of land use and development proposals, and the formulation of recommendations for the mitigation of archaeological and/or paleontological resources. These duties must be performed within the mandate and policies of the Government of Nunavut, and in accordance with the provisions of federal and territorial legislation including the Nunavut Archaeological and Paleontological Sites Regulations (Nunavut Act), the Historical Resources Act, The Territorial Land Use Regulations (Territorial Lands Act), and land claims settlement agreements.
Decisions made by the incumbent have a direct impact on the credibility and overall operation of the Government's archaeology and paleontology program and, in some contexts, on the entire Government of Nunavut (GN).
QualificationsThe incumbent must have a Master's Degree in Archeology in an archeology or anthropology department from an accredited university, including the completion of a thesis and/or research project in Northern/Arctic archaeology, plus 3 years of experience in Arctic archaeological research and resource management. The incumbent must have knowledge of the history and cultures of Nunavut and be familiar with the territorial and federal legislation and land claim environmental assessment structures relevant to the management of heritage resources. Familiarity with multiple software applications is required. Knowledge of research and field activities and ability to use specialized equipment are required for this position. The incumbent should have the ability to use first aid and have knowledge in emergency procedures for field activity. Valid Firearms Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) and Wilderness First Aid certification are considered an asset.
This is a Position of Trust and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut's official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
