Journey Person Instrumentation and Controls Technician, Operations and Maintenance

The Facilities team is comprised of over 300 trades personnel and service workers that provide trusted services and stewardship in support of teaching, learning, and discovery.  This team is responsible for operations, maintenance, service, utilities distribution, and customer support.  The Facilities Team Charter describes the purpose, vision, and values that in turn support the campus community.

Primary Purpose:  This position provides service and maintenance of Building Automation Systems (BAS), including the Steam/Chilling Plant Automation System and various control components and instrumentation associated with these systems and the Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment they support.

Nature of Work: Reporting to the Assistant Manager, Facilities, this position works in a multi-trade environment under variable conditions, both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather, requiring moderate to heavy physical labour. The work involves high volume, variety, and complexity, often collaborating with other trades, clients, and contractors in high-pressure situations and adapting to changing divisional needs. Physical challenges include lifting heavy objects, working from ladders or elevated platforms, and operating in crawlspaces, confined spaces, and construction zones. The work environment may include exposure to hazardous materials such as asbestos, free silica, lead, volatile organic compounds (VOC), and carcinogenic substances. Personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection, must be worn, requiring the worker to be clean-shaven at all times. The incumbent must be available for on-call emergencies on a rotational basis and may need to adjust shifts to accommodate work requirements.

Typical Duties or Accountabilities:

  • Is accountable to the Facilities Team Charter and is aligned with the purpose, vision, and values, and holds themselves and each other accountable to it
  • Performing preventative and corrective maintenance on all instrumentation and components related to BAS and stand-alone electronic and pneumatic components for HVAC controls, including Robertshaw, Delta, and Delta V systems
  • Contributing to the long-term goal of reliability-centered maintenance by assisting in preventative and predictive maintenance schedules and advising maintenance staff on proper equipment operation and care
  • Reviewing and interpreting electronic and paper design drawings to determine work scope and requirements, and preparing estimates
  • Planning work for both shop and field installations to ensure clean and efficient execution
  • Coordinating work with other trades and making recommendations for innovation, improvements, and repairs
  • Procuring materials, promoting outstanding customer service, and supporting workplace initiatives as directed
  • Meeting commitments honestly, respectfully, and consistently
  • Performing other related duties as assigned

Education: Grade 12 Education (with no modified classes) or a GED 12

Licenses:

  • Journeyperson Instrumentation Certificate.
  • Electrical Restricted Journeyperson's License in the Instrumentation Field.
  • Valid Province of Saskatchewan driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Experience: Some experience in construction and maintenance of computer based and pneumatic control systems in commercial/industrial applications and electronic troubleshooting and repair maintenance. Experience in Robert shaw, delta and delta V is an asset.

Skills: Demonstrate well-developed interpersonal and communication skills that enhance the incumbent's performance of work. Sound trouble shooting, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills in order to identify maintenance trends, proactively resolve potential problems, and propose recommendations for improvements. Ability to read and interpret technical documents including HVAC and process control schematics; demonstrated proficient computer skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications; proficient skills in the operation of Industrial or Building Automation control systems; demonstrated effective organization and time management skills; proven ability to work on multiple projects with competing demands to meet deadlines; ability to work independently as well as in a team; excellent troubleshooting skills; physical ability to perform heavy physical labour.  Familiarity with the use of work management systems will be considered an asset.
