Senior Engineer, Mechanical Mission Systems

Reporting to the Manager, Mechanical Engineering the Senior Engineer, Mechanical is responsible for participating in all phases of new construction design projects including requirements decomposition, design preparations, supporting analysis, material selection and specification, engineering execution, and engineering close-out activities.
This role is also responsible for liaison with internal and external partner design teams and the project technical client to ensure that the marine systems design integrate with other interfacing systems and are produced in accordance with the requirements, current equipment information and the production design standards and procedures.
Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.
What you'll do
Provides guidance and oversight to other junior and intermediate engineers, designers or subcontractors.
Develops, reviews and approves requirements, specifications and design documents to achieve customer, Classification Society and regulatory approval.
Perform audits of junior and intermediate engineers work to ensure they are following the mechanical engineering department policies and procedures.
Supports the mechanical engineering manager in development of mechanical engineering department policies and procedures.
Leads by example by performing tasks beyond their job description when requested by their manager and taking ownership of assignments and seeing them through to final implementation.
Represents the company to industry to continue to build Seaspan's reputation.
Reports technical risk and develops mitigation strategies.
Provide direction to suppliers and subcontractors related to the Marine Systems design to achieve contract, cost and schedule performance.
Performs and reviews and approves internal and third-party calculations to validate the system design and compliance with customer, Classification Society and regulatory requirements.
Generates, reviews and approves equipment purchase specifications.
Reviews vendor information about the customer, Classification Society and regulatory requirements.
Proactively ensures the design tasks are conducted in partnership with other engineering disciplines and ensuring good communication of design interfaces with other teams.
Develops and manages the Bill of Materials associated with specific systems.
Develops the maturity of parts associated with the Bill of Materials.

What you'll bring
Bachelor's degree in mechanical systems or mechanical engineering is required.
P.Eng. designation is required.
Minimum 10 years post-secondary experience working in the Mechanical Systems or Mechanical Engineering disciplines, with focus on lifting appliances, launch and recover systems, winches and other scientific equipment, hydraulic systems.
Previous Shipyard experience in New Ship Construction is considered an asset.
Experience working with a diverse integrated project team is considered an asset.
Analytical skills to gather and analyze/synthesize data, confirming its accuracy and adequacy as a key part of the collective analysis/synthesis process.
Demonstrated ability to work independently to develop solutions to technical problems.
Experience completing schematic design (ex. process flow) and supporting calculations.
Knowledge & familiarity with piping and machinery specifications.
Technical writing skills including the ability to produce and present clear, detailed written technical specifications, procedures, and reports.
Knowledge of MRP, purchasing and management systems is preferred.
Understanding Ship Constructor, CADMATIC and ACAD software, document control systems and databases.
Ability to work effectively across a multi-disciplined team.
Critical thinkers with the ability to analyze change requests, projects, and designs to anticipate schedule or budget risk.
Ability to work without supervision and provide technical guidance on testing, evaluating and improving engineering outcomes.
Organizational and interpersonal skills.
Committed to a high standard of safety and able to follow all safety laws and all the employer's safety policies and rules.
Proficient computer skills. Working knowledge of basic Microsoft Office 2010 software suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).

The estimated salary for this position is $119,700 - $146,300. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate's skills and experience the position's location, and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company's sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
