Primary Duties and Responsibilities Reporting to the Scientific Editorial Director and working closely with the Founding Publisher and the editorial team, the Scientific Editor will help shape and carry out scientific activities supporting high-quality publication, research integrity, and author experience.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leverage scientific expertise to critically evaluate manuscripts for scientific rigor, methodological soundness, and other key judgments regarding quality and potential impact
- Communicate professionally and effectively with authors and peer reviewers in providing constructive feedback on manuscripts
- Collaborate with the Editorial Director, Editors-in-Chief, journal editorial boards, and staff on publishing high-quality openly accessible science in a set of JMIR Publications journals
- Make editorial decisions on manuscripts in an efficient and timely manner
- Support high-quality and ethical peer review processes
- Support recruitment and onboarding of new journal editorial board members
- Maintain the highest standards of publication ethics and scientific integrity
- Occasionally write or edit editorials or content in support of knowledge dissemination and translation
Qualifications
Education: PhD, or MD or MD/PhD in the field of medical informatics or digital health, or adjacent fields such as public health, health services research; MSc or Masters in these fields may also be considered when there is applicable experience below.
Experience:
- Active or prior scientist or academic clinician with expertise in medical informatics or digital health or adjacent fields such as public health or health services research with a basic understanding of biomedical statistics
- Expert in at least a subset of research methodologies and evaluative methods involving human subjects research or health services research, including but not limited to quantitative methods (e.g., randomized trials, cohort studies, etc) or qualitative methods
- Proven publication record (peer-reviewed papers as first or corresponding author), ideally history of publishing with JMIR Publications journals
- Familiarity with reporting standards and ethical guidelines for publishing as well as awareness of the current new developments and changes in the publishing environment, such as preprints
- Experience as a high-quality peer reviewer is expected, however, also having editorial experience is a valuable asset

- Innovative thinker - Is knowledgeable about health research and technology, innovation, and health information dissemination, and familiar with current trends in digital health
- Quality of Work - Detail-oriented, delivering high-quality research quickly and efficiently
- Passion for the English academic language and clarity of expression
- Honesty, Integrity, and Ethics - Operates with an approach that is respectful, transparent, trusted widely by others, and is committed to maintaining a high level of integrity; seen as open, truthful, and direct
- Science standard-bearer who can support all facets of evaluating and disseminating high-quality research from leading authors in the field
