The Systems Engineering Director will play a lead role in the delivery of Engineering Services on large and complex projects (generally Class 3, 4 & 5 projects ranging from $1M to > $20M) while also supporting the growth of the Engineering Management practice.Reporting to the Director of Operations of the Engineering Management practice, the Systems Engineering Director will be assigned to projects to contribute to the development of the project engineering team's strategy and overseeing/ensuring the successful execution of the engineering design of large, multi-disciplinary projects from inception to completion. In addition, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including Project Delivery, Technical Professionals Organization (disciplines), external stakeholders to deliver high-quality engineering solutions that meet and exceed client expectations. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, exceptional technical expertise, multi-disciplinary engineering experience, and a proven track record of managing engineering of large-scale projects.Primary Location: Montreal, QuebecYour roleEngineering Planning And ExecutionCollaborate with Win Work (Business Development) and Market Lead to define proposal timelines, deliverables and efforts, ensuring alignment with client requirements and overall business objectives.Collaborate with Project Delivery (Project Management and Project administrative services) team to define project goals, timelines, and deliverables, ensuring alignment with client requirements and overall business objectives during the planning and execution phases.Oversee the engineering project lifecycle, including design, development, testing, and implementation, while managing technical risk and resources effectively.Oversee the Project Design Execution Plan and the inter-disciplinary technical coordination.Ensure safety is prioritized throughout technical deliveryEnsure internal and external effort estimates, schedule, deliverables and obligations associated with the scope of work are fully understood, identified, adhered to and monitored.Prepare and submit project monthly reporting to the Engineering Management Director responsible for a Market or Portfolio Leads.Ensuring all aspects of the Passenger Rail Systems meet the obligations of the Project Requirements Specifications.Leading the various systems engineering teams throughout the Co-Development Phase.Coordinating and providing input to the various disciplines throughout the project lifecycle to deliver Passenger Rail System scope as outlined in the Project Requirements Specification.Technical Expertise And Quality AssuranceProvide strategic technical leadership across all engineering disciplines involved in a rail & transit project, ensuring alignment with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and client expectations.Champion engineering excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement across design methodologies, tools, and delivery processes.Oversee the implementation of quality assurance frameworks, including formal design reviews, technical audits, and compliance assessments.Promote a Value Engineering mindset throughout the project lifecycle, balancing performance, cost, and constructability.Lead the resolution of complex technical challenges, ensuring risks are identified early and mitigated effectively.Ensure all engineering deliverables meet safety, environmental, and operational standards, and support long-term asset performance.Stakeholder CollaborationCollaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders, including clients, architects, vendors, contractors, and regulatory authorities, to ensure project success.Engage in effective communication, providing regular engineering updates, addressing concerns, and managing expectations to foster strong client relationships.Actively participate in meetings, presentations, and technical discussions, representing the engineering team and providing expert insights and recommendations.About YouBachelor'S or Master's degree in engineering or a related discipline, with 15+ years of system design management, including 10+ years in leadership roles on major rail & transit infrastructure projects;Licensed Professional Engineer in Canada, with eligibility for registration in multiple jurisdictions.Experience in delivering large projects and leading multidisciplinary teamsExperience with subway system designsExperience with Fixed Block and ATC/ECTS/DIGITAL forms of signallingExperience in leading systems integration in conformance to the requirements of EN50126Experience coordinating the development of the operations and management control systems, and the interface with third party systems and operationsExperience leading the integration of greenfield scope with existing rail (brownfield) operationsDeep understanding of transit design standards, regulatory frameworks, and stakeholder engagement across municipal, provincial, and federal levels.Strong strategic thinking, decision-making, and leadership capabilities, with the ability to influence outcomes across technical and commercial domains.Experience managing engineering governance, risk, and compliance in highly regulated environments.Excellent communication skills, with the ability to represent engineering interests to executive leadership, clients, and public stakeholders.Experience working under different contract models including Alliance contracts would be an asset.Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to present complex technical information to diverse audiences (both French and English are an asset).Bilingual: English French (*).(*) If you are in the province of Quebec, knowledge of both French and English is required.
