We are looking for a
Building Science Specialist
to join our Building Envelope team. This role is exciting, diverse, and rewarding.

This role focuses on the building science aspects of consulting engineering. The ideal candidate is energetic, enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, and has recently graduated University and has a Building Science and/or Structural Engineering degree. This is a perfect opportunity for an individual looking to start their career with a growing building envelope and structural engineering firm in downtown Toronto.

Engineering Link is focused on offering building envelope and structural engineering services as they relate to the science of the built environment.

In this role, you will complete analysis and design on a wide variety of building science projects. You will be exposed to the design of glass, windows, roofing, curtain wall, and thermal modelling on a wide variety of new construction, restoration, heritage, and other types of projects.

As part of the Building Envelope department at Engineering Link, you will have the opportunity to experience engineering on many levels. You will work closely with colleagues and senior management on projects throughout all phases.

The ideal candidate has co-op or internship experience in a building envelope/building sciences role at a consulting engineering firm. The characteristics we look for is being self-motivated, hard-working, and people who form collaborative relationships with colleagues and clients.

  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience with Microsoft Project and Access is also a desirable skill. Able to neatly layout and letter a hand-sketch.

Responsibilities

  • Working independently and with other team members to conduct field reviews and preparing reports throughout construction. This will include monitoring progress according to specifications, conformity to building codes and standards, and preparation of site review reports.
  • Working independently and with other team members to complete technical assessments, testing and evaluations.
  • Visit construction sites to review work that is in progress. This includes access to/climbing scaffolding and swing-stages.
  • Able to design such elements using a variety of software such as AutoCAD and AutoCAD Reader, REVIT, Oasys, THERM 7.4, Window 7.4, LBNL Windows Software, Navisworks Freedom, and Bluebeam.
  • Review and assess existing building structures. Writing letters to clients based on our findings.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of technical documents such as specifications, typical details, and design aids.
  • Assist in beta-testing new design software.
  • Develop CAD drafting skills to assist with production of building envelope CAD drawings and sketches.
  • Provide cross-functional support for structural engineering projects.
  • Responsible to design and detail structural elements, including design and calculations, computer modelling, and analysis.
  • Investigate field and design problems.
  • Conduct site visits and inspections.
  • Participate in client meetings, facilitating solutions to design issues, providing status updates, and focuses on relationship building and business development.
  • Accepting responsibility for consistency, accuracy, and quality before presenting to the project team (internal and external); and,
  • Accepting responsibility for delivering work within assigned project deadlines and assigned budgets.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Building Sciences or Civil/Structural Engineering.
  • Previous work experience in engineering consulting or construction.
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant design standards and codes. Specifically, the Ontario Building Code.
  • Regularly updates their own technical knowledge and skills and stays current in engineering and best practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy of work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Has a valid G driver's licence.
