Job Summary:

The Director of Employee Relations is a pivotal member of the HR leadership team, responsible for driving HR strategic priorities across both Hospital and Long-Term Care environments. This role collaborates closely with key leaders and the HR team to advance organizational goals while ensuring a strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. The Director will oversee the Occupational Health, Talent Management and HR Business Partnerships teams, fostering a culture of collaboration and excellence.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Strategic HR Leadership:

  • Collaborate with the Vice President and HR leadership team to support the strategic direction of Baycrest.

  • Implement the hospital's People Plan, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and adapting to the current healthcare context and post-pandemic recovery.

  • Advisory Role:

  • Act as a trusted advisor and senior business partner to the Senior Executive Team on all human resources issues, providing expert advice and actionable solutions.

  • Support and collaborate with HR colleagues to lead key initiatives and priorities that enhance organizational effectiveness.

  • Team Development and Mentorship:

  • Mentor and support the HR Business Partners, Talent Management, and Occupational Health teams, providing guidance on best practices and strategic initiatives.

  • Plan, prioritize, and manage the work of direct reports, offering tactical advice, coaching, and performance management.

  • Union Experience:

  • Serve as a key resource in managing union-related matters, including grievance handling, investigations, bargaining, and negotiations.

  • Collaborate with union representatives to resolve disputes and ensure adherence to collective agreements, fostering positive labor relations within the organization.
  • Provide expertise in interpreting collective agreements and implementing their provisions effectively.

  • Policy Management and Compliance:

  • Ensure the effective application of HR policies and procedures, managing compliance with legislative, regulatory, and internal requirements, particularly in health and safety matters.

  • Provide expert guidance on a wide range of HR issues to hospital managers and staff, ensuring that policies are applied consistently and effectively.

  • Health & Safety:

  • Champion the organization's focus on workplace violence prevention and cultivate a positive safety culture.

  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including the Occupational Health & Safety Act, WHMIS, and infection control guidelines.
  • Utilize Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required and address any deficiencies in safety equipment promptly.

  • Patient Safety:

  • Perform responsibilities in a manner that supports Baycrest's safety culture, recognizing and responding to patient/client safety events in accordance with established policies.

  • Report and communicate all safety events, incidents, and near misses, identifying potential risks in daily practices to minimize harm.

  • Skills Development and Knowledge Transfer:

  • Participate in skills and knowledge development initiatives, completing required training and engaging in professional development opportunities.

  • Attend training related to hand hygiene protocols, infection control, and other relevant topics to enhance personal and organizational capabilities.

Qualifications include but are not limited to:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 8-10 years of relevant HR experience with a focus on talent acquisition, employee engagement, organizational effectiveness, and occupational health & safety, particularly within a complex unionized environment.
  • Proven experience in managing union relations, including grievance processes, investigations, bargaining, and negotiation of collective agreements.
  • CHRL or CHRP designation is preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in strategy development and execution, with strong business acumen and the ability to influence and impact organizational culture.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to lead large change initiatives and foster collaboration across teams.
  • Extensive knowledge of applicable legislation, including the Employment Standards Act, Labour Relations Act, Pay Equity Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Long-Term Care Act, and the Hospital Industrial Labour Disputes Act.
  • A creative and innovative mindset to identify opportunities for improvement and drive positive change within the organization.
