Position Summary:

The Surface and Baseworks Site Superintendent oversees the day-to-day operations of roadbuilding and earthworks projects. This role manages the allocation of resources, equipment, and subcontractors, while monitoring work to ensure compliance with contract specifications and company standards. The Superintendent's primary goal is to deliver projects safely, on time, on budget, and to the highest quality standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Supervision

  • Supervise and direct surface and baseworks projects in line with contract documents and company procedures.
  • Lead and support crews, operators, and subcontractors to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality work.
  • Monitor progress and adjust work plans to meet project milestones and deadlines.

Project Execution

  • Oversee sub-cuts, placing, and compacting of gravel, making sure it meets design specs.
  • Coordinate roadbuilding work, including grading, base preparation, and getting areas ready for asphalt, curb, and concrete.
  • Supervise crews and subcontractors, keeping work on schedule, on spec, and safe.
  • Plan and keep track of equipment, materials, and crews to make sure the job flows smoothly.
  • Inspect work regularly to ensure it meets plans and quality standards; address issues on the spot.
  • Make sure materials arrive on time, in the right quantities, and meet project requirements.
  • Keep records of daily progress, crew hours, and equipment use.
  • Work with engineers, clients, and stakeholders to provide updates and resolve questions or problems.
  • Follow environmental and erosion-control requirements on site.

Safety Management

  • Enforce company and regulatory safety requirements for all workers and subcontractors.
  • Lead daily toolbox meetings and ensure Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) are completed and followed.
  • Proactively identify and address potential hazards on site.

Planning & Coordination 

  • Collaborate with the Project Manager to develop and implement construction schedules.
  • Confirm availability of manpower, equipment, materials, and subcontractors to maintain schedule progress.
  • Coordinate daily operations to minimize downtime and maximize productivity.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Complete daily journals, safety documentation, and equipment/maintenance records as required.
  • Track and report on manpower, equipment use, materials, and subcontractor performance.
  • Maintain accurate communication with the Project Manager regarding progress, issues, and risks.

Requirements:

  • 5 - 10 years of civil / infrastructure construction site supervision, preferably in the areas of road building, earthworks and/or sewer and water construction
  • Proficient in written and verbal English, able to provide clear direction and maintain professional communication.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to engage, motivate, and manage crews and subcontractors.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and contracts, identifying scope gaps or additional work.
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced environment, meeting deadlines under pressure.
  • Commitment to leading a safety-first worksite.
  • Competent in computer skills for daily reports, logs, and safety documentation.
