Water Infrastructure and Operations Branch (WIOB)
is part of Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation and has the mandated responsibility to operate, maintain and keep safe the provincially owned water infrastructure. The Branch is made up of multidisciplinary teams including Operations and Maintenance, Engineering and Technical Services and Dam Safety. WIOB is Province wide with office locations across Alberta.

We are hiring an
Operations & Maintenance Team Lead*
to join our dedicated crew in Spruce Grove or Peace River. In this leadership role, you will guide a skilled team responsible for the safe, efficient operation, maintenance, and inspection of complex, provincially owned water infrastructure across Northern Alberta.

Your territory? A vast and vital region stretching from Edmonton to the Northwest Territories border. You'll oversee critical assets like the South Heart Dams, Paddle River Dam, Hutch and Stoney Dams, the Paddle and Pembina Diking System, and numerous smaller projects that keep Alberta's water flowing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Planning and implementing day-to-day inspections, operations, surveillance, flood operations and maintenance activities, coordinating staff resources, and monitoring staff performance.
  • Ensuring infrastructure operates and functions properly and safely. Operations include dams operation, monitoring flow conditions in rivers, channels, and reservoirs, implementing normal operating plans, flood action plans and emergency response plans.
  • Building partnerships with various groups within the branch, other teams within the Government of Alberta, local authorities, and the public.
  • Leadership in the prioritization, project management and support activities required for routine infrastructure maintenance.
  • Leadership in the provision of operational input to support capital rehabilitation, dam safety assessments, and engineering investigations.
  • Leadership in delivery of the Workplace Health and Safety program for the Team.

Qualifications
Two (2) year technical diploma
in Civil Engineering Technology, Water Resources or in a closely related field,
plus seven (7) years' experience
in the operation, maintenance and inspection of infrastructure.

Equivalencies
May be considered - directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Additional Requirements

  • A valid Class 5 driver's license or equivalent.
  • Knowledge and experience in the operation and maintenance of civil, electrical, mechanical and control systems.
  • Knowledge and experience with construction supervision including project management, procurement and contract administration.
  • Experience with emergency management.
  • Experience working in the field or in an industrial setting.
  • Working knowledge of SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems for remote monitoring and alarm response in water infrastructure.

Assets

  • A minimum of 5 years of team supervision, outlined in your resume.
  • Basic understanding of the principals of hydrology, hydraulic structures, geotechnical, soil mechanics, surface drainage, and erosion control.
  • Familiarity with Alberta's Water Act, and Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation, and Code.
  • Standard First Aid, fall protection, and confined space entry certifications.
  • Eligibility for membership with the Association of Science & Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (A.S.E.T.).

  • Monday to Friday (8:00 am to 5:00pm).

  • Flexible start/end times are considered.
  • Evening and weekend work is sometimes required.

  • Participation in a 24/7 standby rotation is required.

  • Standby and overtime will be compensated in addition to advertised salary.

  • Travel: valid driver's license is required for travel (Canada).
