Technician, Department of Chemistry

Primary Purpose: The Technician will support the research and teaching objectives of the Department of Chemistry through maintenance, repair, and upgrading of lab instrumentation and equipment; providing technical support to the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance facilities; and managing the Department of Chemistry rough shop.

Nature of Work: The position will report to the Chemistry Department Head. The incumbent must work independently and in a team environment. Independent decision making and judgement is required. The volume of work is high with varying complexity.

Typical Duties:

Maintenance, Repair, and Upgrading of Lab Instrumentation and Equipment:

  • Repair and maintain equipment and instrumentation found throughout the Department of Chemistry, including equipment and instrumentation used in both research and teaching laboratories
  • Carry out preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating
  • Upgrade new and existing instrumentation
  • Responsible for keeping up-to-date maintenance logs

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Support

  • Responsible for providing technical support to the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance facilities located in the Saskatchewan Structural Sciences Centre
  • Involved in the training of users and maintenance of the NMR instruments
  • Approximately half of the Technician's time will be spent on NMR support

Management and Use of Department Rough Shop

  • Responsible for the use of the Department of Chemistry rough shop to produce custom equipment and parts

Qualifications

Education: Candidates for the position should have, at a minimum, either a diploma in Chemical Technology or a BSc with a major in Chemistry or related degrees/diplomas.

Experience: A strong background and experience with electronics, with a minimum of two years' experience. Significant experience with the operation of NMR instrumentation.

Skills: Ability to install, maintain, and repair equipment and instrumentation; ability to prototype and fabricate equipment and parts; excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills; familiarity with laboratory software; strong organizational skills and initiative.

This position is in scope of CUPE 1975.
