About Forge:

Forge builds automated CNC factories that enable mechanical engineers to go from CAD to physical part 2x faster than anyone else. We take engineer's ideas and turn them into finished prototypes within 4 days or less. Our first factory has been running for 1 year and we have shipped thousands of parts to engineers all over North America. What we are building: 

We are trying to build the most efficient machine shop in the world. One part of that is building a web system to interact with the outside world and to manage as much of our internal operations as possible. The other is automated CAM/DFM software embedded in a custom GUI on our website that makes intelligent decisions and stream lines our quoting and manufacturing process.

Customers log onto our website and upload STEP files to receive an instant quote and pay. Once they do that, we have four days to ship those parts out, so all the other software we write is about making it possible to do that. Give it a try at

About the Role:

We believe a core part of building an efficient machine shop is vertically integrating everything. We have a really wide but flat stack that integrates all aspects of our business, from customers uploading a STEP to monitoring the machines we use to make the parts. We're looking for a strong software engineer with a mind for UX who wants to work across the whole stack. We need help mostly in the following three areas:

  1. Work on webpages / shop displays that integrate with our CNC machines and an embedded computer we have attached to each. We want to replicate the HAAS Control on our website to remote control them
  2. Scale our internal internal "mission control" web app to scale our operations as we move into a shop with 5x the capacity.
  3. Improve or add new functionality to our customer facing webpages according to customers requests (we have a lot of these customers are begging us for)

Specifically, you will:

  • Develop new web pages and features for our internal dashboard, shop displays, and customer portal
  • Improve and extend our backend as necessary to allow for what those new features require
  • Think about UX and design - everything in the UI needs to make our manufacturing team more efficient or the customer experience better
  • Work closely with the manufacturing team to rapidly iterate
  • Work autonomously, with room to chase your own ideas and have them quickly deployed in a real machine shop

What we want to see

  • Strong programming skill, knowledge of javascript/typescript and python.
  • Experience working with modern frontend/backend technologies and patterns
  • Comfortability hoping between front/back ends, making decisions optimal for both
  • For you to pick up some manufacturing concepts on the job to make better applications
  • Have built your own projects or worked on systems that are used by people
  • Comfortability with using git and good versioning control practices
