The Traffic Signals Timing Engineer works under the general direction of the Supervisor of Traffic Signals Systems to design, modify and approve (stamp) signals timing plans and strategies for planned signals timing reviews, emergent situations and signals timing requests submitted by the Operation, Projects and Transportation Management Centre groups. Approved signals timing plans will be implemented either on site by the Operation group or remotely by the Timings group.

The Engineer will analyze intersection and route levels of service, conduct in field traffic observations and signal timing reviews, provide resolution to traffic signals timing issues, and support the Transportation Management Centre in addressing traffic signals timing issues.

The Engineer, as assigned, will complete creation/development of predetermined signals timing plans for a variety of situation which will be selected for implementation by the Transportation Management Centre to address emergency situations that affects the roadways or unexpected traffic fluctuations.

The Engineer will provide information, clarifications and resolutions to Traffic Signals Timing inquiries.

As the Traffic Signals Timing Engineer you will:

  • Design, modify and approve traffic signals timing plans through the development and implementation traffic signal operation and coordination strategies.
  • Prepare traffic signal controllers for new capital work
  • Provide information, clarifications and resolutions to Traffic Signals Timing inquiries
  • Support the Transportation Management Centre in addressing traffic operations issues

Your education and qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering.

  • 2 years' experience working with traffic control systems, principles and practices.

  • 2 years' experience in interpretation of timing plans, traffic signals, specifications, policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of laws and regulations, by-laws, policies, best practices, and procedures governing the safe operation of traffic systems.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders (co-workers, consultants, members of the public, etc.).

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to manage a varied workload and adjust with changing priorities.

  • Ability to apply sound judgement and demonstrate political acumen.

  • Experience with or knowledge of traffic signal controllers, including the Model 170 and Model 2070 controllers, would be an asset.

  • Experience working with large volumes of traffic data would be an asset (e.g. traffic volume data, traffic signal performance metrics, collision data).

  • IMPORTANT: Applicants who have been educated outside of Canada must have education which is comparable to the minimum qualification in Canada.
