The Utilities Team at the Town of Drumheller is seeking an enthusiastic, team-oriented and 'safety first' individual for the position of Equipment Operator II.
POSITION SUMMARY:
With general direction provided by the Utilities Manager and the Underground Lead, as an Equipment Operator II, you'll play a key role in maintaining and operating a variety of heavy equipment and vehicles to support the Town's water, wastewater, and infrastructure systems. From excavation and repair work to daily equipment maintenance, you'll help ensure our essential utilities and infrastructure continue to serve residents safely and efficiently. This position offers a dynamic and hands-on work environment where no two days are the same, ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, operating equipment, and being part of a skilled municipal team.
SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Performs equipment operation and general labour duties related to municipal utilities and infrastructure.
- Operates a range of vehicles up to and over 30,000 lbs GVW (≈13,600 kg), including water, vac, polecat/picker, tandem dump, Hydrovac, and sewer flush trucks.
- Operates heavy equipment such as backhoes and loaders.
- Operates skid steers, compact equipment, and industrial-type tractors with pull-type attachments as required.
- Hauls tools, equipment, and materials such as gravel, asphalt, and topsoil.
- Conducts daily safety checks, maintenance, and minor servicing of assigned equipment; ensures equipment is cleaned, fueled, and stored properly.
- Maintains accurate records of work completed, equipment usage, and required reports.
- Performs manual labour associated with utilities work including excavation, pipe fitting, site cleanup, and surface restoration.
- Assists with installation, repair, and maintenance of water and wastewater infrastructure.
- Carry out garbage collection and disposal duties as needed.
- Participates in the on-call rotation and respond to emergencies as assigned.
- Follows all Town of Drumheller health & safety policies and procedures and Alberta OHS regulations.
- Provides direction or guidance to assigned staff during specific projects or operations.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in a similar role, preferably within a municipal or utilities environment.
- Valid Class 3 driver's license with Q endorsement (Class 1 preferred); able to operate and maintain departmental machinery.
- Demonstrates proficiency with light hand tools and specialized equipment.
- Supervisory or leadership training from the Canadian Public Works Association (CPWA) or equivalent is an asset.
- Water distribution or wastewater collection courses or certifications are considered strong assets.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum 18 years of age and legally entitled to work in Canada.
- May be required to complete training or upgrading related to the duties of a higher classification as operational needs arise.
- Works effectively with minimal supervision and manages variable workloads.
- Reads and writes in English and follows written and oral instructions accurately.
- Works flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and some General Holidays.
- The successful candidate will be required to obtain a clear Criminal Record Check, a clear Vulnerable Sector Check, and a 10-year driver's abstract.
Hours per Week: Monday through Friday - 40 hours per week (on-call rotation required)
Pay Scale: $33.89/hour (Equipment Operator II - CUPE 135 Collective Agreement)
Benefits: As per the Town's Policy and CUPE 135 Collective Agreement
