Freight Dispatcher

Job Overview

We are a small owner-operator trucking company based in Ontario, operating one 20-ft box truck. We are seeking an experienced independent dispatcher to secure loads and handle dispatch-related paperwork on a contract basis.

Responsibilities

Find and book profitable loads for a 20-ft box truck using load boards and broker relationships

Negotiate rates with brokers and shippers

Plan efficient routes within Ontario (and cross-border if applicable)

Handle dispatch paperwork, including:

Rate confirmations

Broker setup packets

Load details and instructions

Communicate load details clearly with the driver/owner

Ensure loads meet truck specifications (dimensions, weight, delivery requirements)

Maintain professional communication with brokers and customers

Focus on consistent, reliable freight (LTL, palletized, local & regional)

Skills

• Proficiency in Transportation Management Systems (TMS), including SyteLine and AS400
• Strong understanding of supply chain logistics, freight management, and shipping & receiving procedures
• Excellent data entry skills with high accuracy and typing speed
• Analytical skills to assess logistics data for operational improvements
• Effective communication skills for clear interaction via multi-line phone systems and in-person conversations
• Knowledge of 3PL operations and freight industry standards
• Exceptional phone etiquette combined with professional interpersonal skills
• Ability to multitask efficiently under pressure while maintaining attention to detail
