The Agency
The Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) is a charity that reduces crime and makes Calgary communities safer by helping youth and adults make positive changes and move away from criminal behaviour. We do this by addressing the root causes of crime through housing, education, employment programs and support so that individuals have alternatives to breaking the law. CJHS is committed to restorative justice and an organizational environment that recognizes the dignity and worth of each person. CJHS values diversity and inclusion and welcomes qualified applicants from all walks of life.
The Program
Bedford House is a Community Residential Facility (CRF) for men on a federal conditional release. It has 32 apartments and utilizes an independent living model while providing support, intensive case management and connections to appropriate community services. Practices are rooted in the CJHS Practice Framework Principles of trauma-informed care, cultural respect and inclusion, restoration and transformation, natural supports and social inclusion and respect & dignity. Bedford House works closely with our funder and partner the Correctional Service of Canada, to ensure the residents have the appropriate support and supervision to make positive changes and address the factors contributing to their criminal behaviours.
The Position
The Caseworker will work in an integrated and collaborative way within the Bedford House team, wider CJHS team, the Calgary Parole Office, and the community to ensure Bedford House residents are supported in their integration journeys and are afforded the opportunity to address individual risk factors. Reporting to the Team Leader, the Caseworker is responsible for the case management of residents, day-to-day shift duties and resident support and supervision. They will have an assigned caseload and will work closely with individual residents to conduct assessments, goal setting and action planning utilizing a strength-based, trauma-informed approach. The Caseworker will support all residents of Bedford House with day-to-day activities, referrals and other informal therapeutic interventions. The ability to adapt to both routine and crisis situations as they arise is vital to the role. As this is a residential facility, shift work and other duties will be required, including basic household chores.
The successful candidate will have relevant post-secondary education and/or relevant experience in the human services field. The Caseworker will demonstrate a meaningful understanding of the CJHS Practice Framework Principles: Trauma-Informed, Restoration and Transformation, Cultural Respect and Inclusion, Natural Supports and Social Inclusion, and Respect & Dignity and how these principles may be applied to the target population in a community residential facility. Knowledge of the correctional system would be beneficial. Experience with risk management and sound decision-making skills are vital to the role.
Brain Story Certification considered an asset.
This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) that requires shift work (primarily daytime and evening; however, also the occasional overnight). The Caseworker will participate in an On-Call rotation. A current criminal record check and an enhanced reliability screening (through the Government of Canada) are required.
Applications will be accepted until a suitable candidate is found.
