Position Status: Temporary, Between 8 – 40 Hours, During the Voting Period
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is seeking Mail-In Ballot Clerks to join our Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (OCEO) team to assist with the upcoming Provincial Women's Representative By-Election, and District Council Elections for Red Deer, Calgary-Nose Hill, and Wabasca-Desmarais Métis Districts. These are temporary honoraria-based positions from February 1-24. Shifts running from February 1-24 will be determined by the number of mail-in ballots received.
Under direction from the Deputy Returning Officer (DRO), Mail-In Ballot Clerks will keep detailed records to ensure ballots are properly tracked, verifies, and sorted. Mail-In Ballot Clerks will also assist with the counting of mail-in ballots on February 22. On occasion and under certain circumstances, the Mail-In Ballot Clerks may have to assume additional responsibilities set forth by the Chief Electoral Officer. The Mail-In Ballot Clerk will be responsible for helping to ensure the electoral process is carried out in accordance with the Elections and Referenda Act.
The Mail-In Ballot Clerk will be responsible for the fair and efficient running of the upcoming elections:
- Receiving and logging mailed-in ballots,
- Upholding guidelines by ensuring the validity of voting,
- Sorting and organizing of ballots to prepare them for counting, and
- Assisting with the counting of mail-in ballots.
This role will involve short timelines for training and deployment to support the voting event. Please be aware that we are expecting to onboard people as soon as possible.
Skills & Competencies
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills with experience using Microsoft Office software.
- Ability to support voters who may require additional assistance, as required.
- Possess basic analytical skills.
- Attention to detail is required.
- Adaptable and flexible with changing priorities in a fast-paced work environment.
- Possess political awareness and sensitivity when interacting with others.
- Ability to work well with a team or independently.
- Working knowledge of Cree and/or Michif is considered an asset.
Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Deep knowledge of the Métis Nation of Alberta, its Bylaws, history, goals, and objectives. Knowledge of Métis culture and issues affecting Métis people is an asset.
- Basic knowledge of elections and voting processes is an asset.
- Must not be an elected member of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.
Note: A person who is the spouse, child, brother, sister, mother or father of a candidate for the District Elections is ineligible to be appointed as a Mail-In Ballot Clerk.
Other Requirements
- Positions will be based in Edmonton, Alberta. In office presence will be required.
- Reliable transportation and a valid Class 5 Driver's License.
- Availability to work evenings and weekends.
- Must be able to provide a clean Police Information Check (Criminal Record Check).
