The Durham District School Board acknowledges that many Indigenous Nations have longstanding relationships, both historic and modern, with the territories upon which our school board and schools are located. Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor to perform general Board maintenance as assigned, including various work orders; supervise and work with part-time summer employees and other trades, as required; and be responsible for communications with Board Staff, colleagues, other trades, and the community.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general board maintenance, as assigned
- Responsible for removing damaged floor tiles, cleaning the sub-floor, applying new adhesive and installing new tile;
- Responsible for removing damaged drywall , determining thickness and fire rating, installing new drywall with proper back-up, repairing beadings and mouldings, and sealing joints, mud and sand;
- Responsible for installing patio slabs which involves determining the area of finished work and the depth of prepared under surface, fit and cut;
- Responsible for performing portable maintenance which includes the following: assessing, replacing or repairing the skirting, floors, sub-floors, roof metal or shingles, stairs, railings and decks, measuring and ordering new materials, cutting rotting parts, building and installing a new section, and re-levelling pillars and replacing them with support beams (when necessary);
- Responsible for the installation of sod and for the construction and installation of flower beds. This involves removing debris from the area, levelling the ground with a tractor, adding top soil, rolling and watering the area;
- Responsible for removing and installing ball diamonds, field goal posts, and flag poles;
- Responsible for installing catch basins and underground drainage pipes (which involves properly surveying the land to ensure new drainage systems will be conducive with the amount of fall of water), weeping beds, pre-fab concrete steps, wheelchair access ramps, sidewalks, culverts, and small bridges and walkways over culverts;
- Purchase new equipment and material to construct jungle gym playgrounds and jumping pits, upon request; build these under the discretion of staff;
- Perform general maintenance work on the following: walls, floors, ceiling, walkways and paths, landscaping, trees, fences, interior structures and fixtures, and equipment.
- Perform maintenance duties outlined by various work orders, upon request
- Responsible for performing maintenance duties to ensure the completion of various work orders, some of which may include the following: repairing telescopic bleacher systems and basketball backboard systems; the installation of tee bar ceiling tile, ceramic tile, cement access steps to school, blackboards, cork boards, velcro stripping, coat racks, and cupboards and shelving, venetian blinds, and signs and posts; assembling and disassembling work stations; caulking windows and doors; planting, removing and relocating trees; building retaining walls and garbage compounds; relocating garbage bins and pre-formed steps; grading and fertilizing playing fields and tracks; forming and pouring sidewalks; building railings; welding protective screens for windows and boiler room louvers; relocating bike racks; placing and spiking parking curbs and walkway barriers; and setting ballards and chaining driveways.
- Supervise part-time summer employees
- Responsible for supervising summer help on an intermittent basis for four to six months by assigning work and giving instructions and directions.
- Organize timetables.
- Responsible for working with/assisting other trades and employees, as required
- Order, measure and fabricate materials;
- Order locates for in ground services;
- Responsible for assigning appropriate manpower to operate machinery;
- Responsible for contracting contractors;
- Assist carpenters, plumbers, bricklayers, and any other trades working on site.
- Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor
Equipment Used
Hand tools ( saw, hammer, etc.), power tools ( saw, drill, etc.), welding equipment, truck/van, new hydraulic auger, heavy equipment (front end loader, large dump truck-float combinations, Case 4 Wheel Drive tractor, etc), other equipment (transit, air monitoring meter, two-way radio), and rented equipment (Vibra-Rollers, Bob Cats, power chippers, jumping jacks, and plate tampers)
Qualifications
- Secondary School Diploma, plus some specialized training related to skilled trades, and at least two years related experience; or an equivalent combination of formal education and related employment experience.
- A valid "D" class driver's licence is required. Successful candidate may also be required to obtain an "A" class licence within 3 months from date of appointment, if required.
- Ability to delegate tasks and supervise the performance and safety of part-time employees.
- Ability to apply a wide range of maintenance knowledge to evaluate and devise solutions as to machine or maintenance processes
- A sound knowledge of WHMIS and the 'Building Code' .
- Employee must possess the abilities to: lift or move heavy weights, work at various heights, perform duties under extreme weather temperatures, and stand or sit for long durations of time
- The ability to communicate effectively with Board staff, colleagues, other trades and the public.
Additional Information
- This is a 40 hour per week temporary position available until approximately June 30, 2026.
- Hours are 2:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m..
- Provide a current Criminal Background Check with vulnerable sector screening upon hire.
