COMMUNITY HOMES FOR CHILDREN - Direct Support Worker (Casual)

New Directions is a social service agency offering a wide range of resources and services that foster people's hopes and dreams in their communities.

Child Home Services (CHS) is one of the many programs offered by New Directions; this program provides homes for children and youth with behavioural and emotional difficulties. Our community-based resources are designed to promote a sense of belonging and provide opportunities to engage in a meaningful life. This is achieved by creating a home environment that welcomes the participation of the child or youth as a member, supporting his or her pursuit of interests and goals, and helping maintain and strengthen the bond between the child or youth and his or her significant others. We provide an environment that is non-judgmental, safe and caring.

Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):

  • Establish meaningful, caring, and respectful relationships with children, youth and their families
  • Serve as a positive role model for children and their families
  • Provide care in a community and residential setting
  • Provide medical, emotional, environmental, physical and behavioral support
  • Participate in programming to meet the individual goals of children and youth
  • Participate in various recreational and physical activities with children and youth
  • Cooking, house cleaning, yard work and other household maintenance duties
  • Provide assistance with personal care routines such as lifts, transfers, personal hygiene, and nutrition support
  • Complete all required documentation effectively

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Post-secondary education in the disability/social service sector is considered an asset
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience supporting individuals with autism, intellectual/developmental disabilities, anxiety, and self-injurious behaviour
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License with the ability to operate a motor vehicle without supervision
  • This role is physically demanding. Health Care Aide training and experience is considered an asset
  • Ability to transfer knowledge and awareness into behaviors and expectations recognized as appropriate by members of identified cultures and by people with lived experience
  • The individuals in this home may display physical behaviors of concern, so it is important for staff to have a good understanding of the support plan and to communicate effectively as a team
  • Effective self-care strategies and ability to remain professional in stressful situations

The salary for all casual positions is $17.11 per hour to start. There are no minimum hours guaranteed for this position.

The successful candidate will be subject to Criminal Record, Child/Adult Abuse Registry, and Prior Contact checks. In addition, applicants will be required to provide a copy of their Driver's License and a current Driver's Abstract.

This posting will remain open until all positions have been filled.
