Job Overview

St. Clair College's Motorcycle Training Program is seeking experienced, safety-focused riders interested in becoming Candidate Motorcycle Instructors. This role is ideal for riders passionate about motorcycle safety who enjoys mentoring new riders and contributing to road safety education. Successful candidates will enter the Canada Safety Council "Gearing Up" instructor pathway, beginning as a Candidate Instructor and progressing based on ability, experience, and time in the program.

Duties

  • Support student learning in a controlled, safety-first environment
  • Demonstrate proper riding techniques and safe riding behaviors
  • Communicate clearly and patiently with novice riders
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Uphold Canada Safety Council and St. Clair College training standards
  • Participate in instructor meetings, training, and annual refreshers
  • Assist with on-motorcycle and classroom instruction for beginner riders
  • Uphold safety protocols and ensure a secure environment for all participants

Qualifications

  • Full Ontario M motorcycle licence
  • Minimum 3 years of on-road riding experience
  • Good driving record (driver abstract required)
  • Basic First Aid certification (required prior to CSC certification)
  • Own a road-licensed street motorcycle and actively ride
  • Own required safety gear (DOT-approved helmet, gloves, boots, jacket, pants)
  • Available to work weekends
  • Able to pass a modified MOST II skills test

Training & Time Commitment (Important)

  • Approximately 72 hours of unpaid instructor training
  • Shadow 3–4 full weekend courses under a Chief Instructor
  • Minimum of 2 courses taught per year after certification
  • 12-hour unpaid annual refresher required
  • Completion of required college online training (including WHMIS

Instructor Levels The Gearing Up program operates with three levels of instructors: Instructor: Responsible for training with the highest regard for safety.

Senior Instructor: In addition to training students, also supervises courses, and administers skill tests.

Chief Instructor:

Responsible for instructor training, refreshers, quality control and assist the sponsor as needed. Also supervises courses and trains students. You will initially be trained as an instructor and upgraded according to your ability, experience and time with the program.

TIME COMMITMENTS

Becoming an instructor and maintaining certification requires a large time commitment. This is a big commitment

All training is unpaid, volunteer time. Instructor training: The process of becoming certified takes approximately 72 hours of your own time. You will need to attend a minimum of 3 or 4 20 hour weekend courses to shadow teach (observe) while the Chief Istructor is present.

You will need to read and understand a Canada Safety Council "Gearing Up" instructor manual outlining what we do, when we do it and why we do it. This manual will be supplied to you by the College. Annual teaching hours: Canada Safety Council requires instructors to teach a minimum of 2 courses per year before recertification. Annual recertification:

NOTE:

  • You must attend a minimum 12 hour unpaid refresher annually under the direction of the program Chief instructor at the start of every training season. Instructor meetings: Program meetings may take place from time to time. College required online training: All staff, contracted workers and volunteers are required to complete various online training modules, including WHMIS training.
