Role

Reporting to the Vice President of Taxation (global head of tax), the Tax Director, Corporate will lead the international tax initiatives and oversee compliance & reporting (for Canada and Europe) with the help of 3 direct reports. This a highly challenging role and offers an excellent opportunity for career development and growth as a tax professional in a dynamic and challenging work environment.

The Tax Director, Corporate is responsible for the overall tax planning initiatives both domestically and internationally. This position requires significant depth and breadth of international tax planning experience and technical capabilities due to the tax complexity and changing tax environment. This function manages all global tax planning, business initiatives, incentives and the development of technical positions to ensure risks are minimized, appropriate tax structures are established, maximization of incentives and tax positions are supported, managed, and defended, as required.

Primary Responsibilities:

International Tax:

  • Analyze and model the tax implications of foreign affiliate transactions, including:
  • Draft and review step plans;
  • Analyze foreign affiliate financial statements to assess the tax implications of proposed transactions;
  • Review legal agreements and
  • Communicate tax considerations to global stakeholders.
  • Coordinate internal and external teams of professionals to ensure timely and accurate implementation of transactions.
  • Work with accounting and compliance teams to ensure transactions are accurately documented and reported.
  • Provide guidance and direction to Treasury related to the financing structures and cash movements, optimizing our ETR and achieving efficient movement of cash.
  • Draft funds flow memos setting out the appropriate characterization of cash movements for day-to-day cash movements and larger transactions.
  • Research and evaluate repatriation strategies including responsibility for Surplus and ACB calculations.
  • Assist with global M&A and post-acquisition integration activities including tax due diligence, structuring and review of agreements.

Compliance and Reporting (Canada and Europe)

  • Lead Tax Compliance and Tax Provision for Canada and provide oversight for Europe.
  • Responsible for accurately reporting budgeted income taxes and forecasting monthly ETR and cash tax payments.
  • Provide tax leadership through collaboration with Martinrea Corporate Finance Group and other Finance functions in Canada and abroad in regard to tax accounting and compliance on direct and indirect tax matters.
  • Responsible for managing Canadian tax audits for direct and indirect taxes. Provide mentorship and direction on European tax audits.
  • Act as lead collaborating with external auditors and tax advisors on significant tax transactions and gain alignment with external parties on potential tax consequences in a timely and efficient manner.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Manage Global Mobility tax compliance with the help of external consultants.
  • Collaborate with external consultants and internal business partners to leverage opportunities for government grants, funding, tax credits and other incentive programs.
  • Responsible for identifying and communicating tax risks.
  • Keep abreast of new tax legislations and analyze their impact.

Qualifications and Attributes:

  • CPA/CA designation with completed In-Depth Tax program or Master of Taxation.
  • Minimum 10+ years corporate tax experience in a firm or in industry dealing with organizations operating across the globe, including experience with permanent establishment rules and application of treaties.
  • Talented at analyzing and researching complex issues and developing innovative solutions to optimize tax positions.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills and ability to manage multiple competing priorities and ensure that corporate tax initiatives are implemented systematically and within set timelines and budget across the organization.
  • Ability to take initiative and ownership of challenges and opportunities and see them through to resolution.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to work cooperatively with all levels of employees across functional areas and maintain positive relationships throughout the organization.
  • Ability to lead consultations with, and manage, outside tax advisors.
