Job DetailsDescriptionJob DescriptionOntario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences is seeking a Child and Youth Counsellor (CYC). Adolescents with a mental illness work in partnership with the multidisciplinary team, their family and involved community agencies to learn about their illness, enhance their independence and coping skills, and develop the tools necessary to prosper within the community through peer interaction, group treatment and individual therapy. The CYC must have the ability to provide evaluation, assessment and therapeutic interventions in a recovery-focused model of care incorporating modern mental health techniques and the principals of Child and Youth Counseling in a psychiatric setting. The successful incumbent fosters a culture of trust, leadership and dependability in providing: a safe, healthy and stimulating environment for adolescents. Working as a member of the Inter-professional team, the CYC assists in creating management programs for individuals and groups, in order to stabilize a variety of psychiatric disorders. The CYC will provide life skills training through formalized instructions and example; assist co-workers in a classroom, day treatment setting, family therapy or other on-going therapies; use appropriate techniques to diffuse extremes in behavior; manage psychiatric crisis and assess mental status; and provide a coordinating role rotating basis during assigned shifts. Irregular hours and travel may be required.Qualifications RequiredChild and Youth Worker Diploma.OACYC membership in good standing.Certification in First Aid and CPR- HCP.Demonstrated experience working with developmental, physically and emotionally disturbed adolescents.Demonstrated knowledge of normal and abnormal development and treatment approaches (i.e. behaviour management).Demonstrated knowledge of individual, family and group assessment and counseling.Demonstrated knowledge of psychiatric disordersDemonstrated knowledge of crisis intervention techniques.Demonstrated knowledge of Child and Family Services Act, Mental Health, and relevant policies and legislation, such as the Mental Health Act and PHIPADemonstrated working knowledge/experience with computersMeditech experience preferredProven excellent interpersonal skills and effective oral/written communication skills.Demonstrated ability to provide leadership.Demonstrated excellent organizational, analytical, prioritization, problem-solving, decision-making, critical thinking and conflict resolution abilities.Ability to perform the physical demands of the position.Proven good attendance record with the capability of maintaining this same standard.Must be able to work shifts.Link to OPSEU Wage Table- This position is part of the OPSEU bargaining unit.Job Posting Closing: January 16th, 2026.
