The Department of English at the University of Prince Edward Island invites applications for a Sessional Instructor for the 2026 First Summer Semester to teach ENGL 3910. This position is subject to final budgetary approval.

ENGL 3910 – Modernism in Paris

This 3000-level experiential-based course is experiential-based to immerse students in the environment within which English-speaking modernist authors wrote, interacted, and lived their lives. Students will spend ten days in Paris, visiting and discussing the sites and scenes where literature by James Joyce, Gertrude Stein, and F. Scott Fitzgerland was written, published, and read. As they visit literary salons, modernist art museums, bookshops, and cafés, students will reimagine for themselves the Paris that inspired so much innovative and exciting literature. The course will begin with online lectures and resources, along with online information sessions, all of which will prepare you for the overseas experience. Students will read a few modernist poems, short stories, and a short novel, all written in or set in post-war Paris. Among other sites, students will visit the Louvre, the Palace of Versailles, and Claude Monet's gardens at Giverny.

Qualifications:

Successful applicants will have a PhD specialization in British and American Modernism, experience organizing study abroad programs at UPEI, and professional contacts in Paris to facilitate the field trip portion of this course.

Preference will be given to the qualified candidates with seniority on the UPEI Sessional Roster and full-time and term contract Faculty Members of the Academic unit.
