Launching Gantry Operator
Position Overview
A Launching Gantry Operator is responsible for operating specialized launching gantry cranes used in bridge and viaduct construction. These machines place heavy precast segments from above, especially in areas with difficult terrain or limited ground access. The operator ensures safe lifting, precise placement, equipment inspection, coordination with ground crews, and adherence to strict safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Operation of Launching Gantry Equipment
Operate the launching gantry to lift, move, and accurately position precast bridge segments along girders and piers.
Manipulate controls to regulate speed, direction, and hoist movement according to written, verbal, or signal instructions.
Conduct segment placement in span‑by‑span, incremental launching, or balanced‑cantilever erection methods as required by project design.
2. Inspection, Maintenance & Pre‑Operational Checks
Perform daily inspections of structural components, hoisting systems, cables, hydraulic systems, electrical elements, and safety mechanisms.
Address wear, corrosion, or damage immediately to ensure safe operation.
Complete routine maintenance tasks and maintain accurate logs of operations and maintenance activities.
3. Load Management & Safety Control
Calculate and verify correct load distribution to prevent structural overload and ensure system stability.
Interpret load charts and technical documents to determine optimal lifting configurations.
Identify and report hazards, equipment malfunctions, and unsafe conditions immediately.
4. Communication & Coordination
Coordinate with ground personnel using radios, hand signals, or established communication protocols.
Monitor environmental factors such as wind, weather, and site constraints in real time.
5. Documentation & Compliance
Maintain operational, safety, load, and maintenance records.
Ensure full compliance with project safety standards, regulatory requirements, and engineering specifications.
Required Qualifications
Experience operating heavy lifting equipment such as gantry or launching cranes.
Ability to read technical manuals, load charts, blueprints, and engineering drawings.
Certification as a gantry or crane operator (e.g., NCCCO or equivalent)
Strong understanding of crane safety, load physics, and construction site operations.
Physical fitness and ability to work in demanding outdoor and elevated environments.
Preferred Skills
Prior work experience in bridge, viaduct, or segmental construction projects.
Familiarity with span‑by‑span, incremental launching, and balanced‑cantilever erection systems.
Troubleshooting and basic mechanical repair capabilities.
Work Environment
Launching gantry operators typically work:
On elevated bridge piers and long spans where ground access is limited.
In conditions demanding precision, safety awareness, and continuous coordination.
In environments requiring careful control of heavy loads and adherence to strict construction schedules.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $53.59 per hour
Expected hours: No more than 60 per week
Work Location: In person
