POSITION OVERVIEW
The Planner is an entry level professional role designed for planners in the early stages of their planning consulting career. Working under the guidance of Intermediate and Senior Planners, the Planner supports a wide range of development and public sector planning projects while building technical, policy, and professional skills. This role offers structured mentorship, exposure to both private and public-sector planning environments, and a clear pathway for advancement within the firm.
KEY RESPONSABILITIES
Under the direction of senior staff, the Planner will:
- Assist in the preparation of Planning Justification Reports, Planning Justification Briefs, and supporting documentation for development applications
- Support applications under the Planning Act, including Official Plan Amendments, Zoning By-law Amendments, Plans of Subdivision and Condominium, Consents, and Minor Variances
- Conduct planning policy research and analysis at the municipal, regional, and provincial levels
- Assist with public-sector planning projects such as Official Plan updates, Zoning By-law updates, Secondary Plans, Community Improvement Plans, and municipal guidelines
- Support coordination efforts with approval authorities, commenting agencies, and project stakeholders
- Participate in pre-consultation meetings and internal project meetings alongside senior staff
- Assist with urban design-related tasks, including conceptual development plans, streetscape studies, neighbourhood planning, and urban design briefs
- Prepare presentation materials and assist with public consultation and engagement processes
- Maintain organized project files and complete weekly timesheet submissions
- Perform additional duties as assigned in a consulting environment
QUALIFICATION AND CORE COMPETENCIES
The successful candidate will possess:
Education & Experience
· Undergraduate or graduate degree in Land Use Planning, Urban Planning, Urban Design, Geography, or a related field
· 1–3 years of related professional experience in a consulting or municipal planning environment
· Actively pursuing Registered Professional Planner (MCIP, RPP) designation or eligibility
Technical & Professional Skills
· Foundational understanding of Ontario planning legislation and policy, including the Planning Act and Provincial Planning Statement
· Strong research, analytical, and writing skills
· Ability to draft sections of professional planning reports with guidance and feedback
· Basic understanding of zoning by-laws and development approval processes
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Sharepoint, Teams)
· Familiarity with graphic or design software (AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, SketchUp) is considered an asset

WORKING CONDITIONS
· Work Schedule: Full-time (40 hours per week)
· Standard Office Hours 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM when working onsite
· Location: Hybrid/In office (Home office locations may be based in Niagara Falls, Hamilton, or Toronto).
· Payroll every two weeks

· Hourly rate: $28 – $35 per hour commensurate with experience and qualifications
