Position Overview

Work directly with founders on predictive handover algorithms for mission-critical satellite-terrestrial connectivity. Apply your PhD research in real-time wireless ML to defence challenges like Doppler compensation, scintillation prediction, and beam switching.

Duration: 4, 8, or 12 months (May-Sep 2026 start preferred)

Location: Remote-first

Compensation: $28-35/hr CAD (co-op rate), based on experience

Eligibility: Current PhD student in EE/CS/Aerospace (MASc completed preferred)

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement ML models (LSTM/transformers) for link degradation forecasting using ns-3 simulation data and real propagation datasets
  • Optimize handover prediction algorithms for edge deployment (sub-50ms latency)
  • Integrate physics-informed models with 3GPP NTN standards and ORAN interfaces
  • Validate performance against CAF SATCOM requirements (Arctic/maritime scenarios)
  • Contribute to IDEaS Phase 1 proposal technical deliverables

Required Qualifications

  • PhD candidate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Aerospace Engineering
  • Experience with Pytorch/Tensorflow and time-series forecasting for wireless systems
  • Familiarity with wireless simulation tools
  • Coursework or projects in satellite communications,MIMO or propogation modeling
  • Strong Python skills and containerization (Docker)

Assets (Strongly Preferred)

  • Experience with LEO satellite dynamics (Doppler, beam switching)
  • Knowledge of 3GPP NTN release 17+handover procedures
  • RF Engineering background or ORAN familiarity
  • Published research in IEEE transactions or similar
