Resident Care is responsible for the planning, coordinated development, management and implementation of long term care home nursing and personal care activities, programs, services and initiatives to the residents of a municipal long term care facility.
You are responsible for supporting total resident care, according to a Resident Care Plan, ensuring residents' optimal functioning and well-being in a supportive, therapeutic environment, with an emphasis on resident safety and engagement.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCECompletion of a Personal Support Worker (PSW) certificate program* which meets the standards established in the Fixing Long-Term Care Act.
Clinical Practicum hours within the Personal Support Worker program consist of a minimum of one hundred and forty (140) hours, as practical experience, preferably with clinic experience in a geriatric or long term care setting.
Combined class and practical experience must be 600 hours in duration.
KNOWLEDGE- Resident hygiene, optimal functioning, well-being, feeding, elimination
- Health Care Aide routines and practices in a long-term care setting
- Infection prevention and control guidelines
- Transfer and positioning techniques of residents
- Rehabilitation and palliative care approaches
- Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers
- Effective team member
- Respectful and caring to residents
- Communicate with cognitively impaired residents, and their families
- Organize and prioritize workload
- Manage time effectively
- Follow resident care plan and carry out activities as directed
- Report resident needs through observation of physical and mental condition/behaviour
- Follow safety procedures to maintain a safe and clean environment
- Transfer and positioning techniques of persons requiring long-term care
- Good interpersonal and communications skills
- Meets the physical demands of the job

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Language Requirement: Various language requirements, locations may require English only, French only OR Bilingual competencies. Some positions require English oral, reading, and writing. Some positions required French oral, reading and writing
- Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3) with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa's satisfaction.; Note: Under the age of 18, requires a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters (Level 2) check in place of the Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3).; Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.
- You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
- Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
