Integrated Maintenance(Construction)/Mental Health Support Worker: Temporary Part-Time

PHS is hiring for an Integrated Maintenance/Mental Health Worker position, TEMPORARY part-time, from Wednesday to Friday from 12PM-12AM This position has a term of 6 months with the possibility of extension.
JOB SUMMARY
As a resourceful handy-person with diverse maintenance and construction skills, PHS Maintenance/Mental Health Workers are fully capable of attending to electrical, plumbing, and carpentry; both in regular maintenance and emergency repair tasks. This position is expected to bring a compassionate and nonjudgmental approach to attending to client's maintenance needs in both occupied and unoccupied units. This position works as member of the PHS Maintenance Team and will be expected to redeploy and work across the PHS continuum as directed by the PHS Senior Maintenance Manager or their designate.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The job includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- Responsible for the repair and maintenance of the project when on shift, in order to ensure that the mandate of PHS to house those most at risk of homelessness, be maintained.
- Establishes, monitors and carries out preventative maintenance for buildings, equipment and grounds. Ensures building and equipment meet all safety, security and fire regulations and policies.
- Performs carpentry, electrical, painting, mechanical and plumbing maintenance and repairs such as repairing furniture, constructing shelves, installing switches, replacing plugs and other basic appliance repairs, applying paint and other finishes, repairing drywall, disassembling and reassembling equipment, replacing sinks and toilets and applying finishing material such as linoleum.
- Responsible for responding to the project or shelters physical needs on a day-to-day basis.
- Submits and responds to electronic service request system (maintenance tickets) through PHS Support Request System or Arcori.
- Collects and removes garbage and recyclable materials and ensures the safe disposal of hazardous materials.
- Maintains good relations with and assists, when possible, contractors coming into projects or shelter sites (i.e., plumbers, electricians, etc.).
- Communicates with the management and staff team on a daily basis with regards to all concerns, events and activities of significance.
- Assists in the completion of monthly building reports.
- Applies standard purchasing procedures to acquire goods and services.
- Fosters a sense of community and provides social, emotional, and behavior management support to residents/shelter guests.
- Uses analytical abilities to observe and respond to participant/shelter guests' needs and attempt to mitigate potential emergency situations; being knowledgeable that certain behaviors may be indicative of de-compensating behavior.
- Listens and responds to resident/shelter guests concerns, questions and requests in a manner that conveys respect.
- Responsible for de-escalating hostile interactions between residents/shelter guests; escalate to project manager as necessary.
- Responding to resident-related emergency calls when the project manager is not on site.
- Assists with basic first aid, overdose response and performing CPR when necessary.
SKILLS / ABILITIES
- Demonstrates ability to work with residents/shelter guests in a manner that conveys respect.
- Strong interpersonal skills; working knowledge of conflict resolution, and deescalation, and crisis intervention techniques.
- Must bring a non-judgmental, compassionate and anti-oppressive approach to working with marginalized populations.
- Proven organizational skills and efficiency operating in a challenging, dynamic environment, ability to prioritize, work under pressure and manage tight deadlines with a varied and demanding workload.
- Respects confidentiality among residents/shelter guests.
- Responsible for providing an efficient, effective and professional response in crisis situations.
QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE
- Must have a minimum of a high school diploma or an equivalent amount of experience.
- Minimum two years of maintenance and/or construction experience.
- Must bring a non-judgmental, compassionate and anti-oppressive approach to working with marginalized populations.
- Strong interpersonal skills; working knowledge of conflict resolution, and de-escalation techniques.
- A valid Class 5 BC driver's license preferred, with satisfactory driving record.
- Awareness of mental health and substance use issues essential.
- Current First Aid/CPR certification is essential. Narcan, Overdose Management training will be provided.
- Successful applicant(s) will be required to complete a satisfactory criminal record check.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Job Type: Temporary, part-time.
Position Term: 6 months minimum, with the possibility of extension.
Wage: $31.56/hour {Grid 34}; wages according to Union Contract, CUPE 5536
Benefits: Extended healthcare, dental, vision care.
Schedule: Wednesday/Thursday/Friday 12:00PM to 12:00AM (33 hours/week)
