OKC is a community development agency. It involves families in all aspects of program planning, implementation and evaluation.

This position is a two part position with half time working on visiting families in homes, and half time doing the nutrition component of our programs.

As part of the OKC team, the Nutrition Facilitator/Outreach Worker will

· Ensure they provide effective and empathetic service to families in their homes and in the Centre

· Provide opportunities for families in need of support to identify their needs/goals and to develop strategies to respond to those needs within a community development model.

· Be expected to work independently with clear guidelines defining their role.

· Support the community kitchens, nutrition related workshops and daily food ins/outs of programs offered through OKC

· Assist with the development of leadership and peer helper skills and provide the necessary support enabling peers to practice and carry out these new skills.

· Report to the Director of Programs and Services

Primary Responsibilities

· Provides resources and information to families to assist in meeting their needs and goals

· Encourages follow through with the goals identified by the family using a strength-based approach

· Sets appropriate boundaries with the families they visit

· Facilitates the appropriate sharing of information ensuring confidentially

· Liaises with other involved community services to access appropriate resources for and together with families

· Participate in activities planned with families

· Ensures a non-judgmental approach to families

· Participate in committee work and staff meetings/team building as required

· Completes the required forms and reports of the program for OKC To provide programs and services in a manner that is consistent with OKC mission and reflects the core values of community development.

· Must be accountable for ensuring a safe kitchen environment adhering to provincial regulatory standards and practices for cleanliness, scheduled equipment maintenance, and food safety.

· Assists in the development of programs that improve food security for OKC participants

· Support the weekly snack program, prepares weekly grocery order ensuring food served and used within the Centre adheres to OKC Nutrition Policy, keep basic food shelf stocked and other kitchen supplies

· Promotes the Good Food Box Program as a host site

· Supports the peer lead kitchens

· Assists with the evaluation of nutrition programs, on an internal and external basis (i.e. collecting feedback from participants, stakeholders and staff )

· Maintains professional networking with peers, families and community stakeholders

· Assist with and attend Outreach events in the community

Education/Experience

· Related experience with foods and nutrition or hospitality and/or ongoing education in one or more of the following: health promotion, group facilitation, adult education, community development, Social Work, or Early Childhood Education.

· 2 years' experience in a broad range of areas such as early childhood development, physical and emotional health issues in young children and adults, parenting, family life dynamics, assessment of complex family situations, health promotion

Skills & Abilities

· Sound knowledge of the principles of community development

. Experience running groups of adults and children.

· Knowledge of community resources and working relationships with community programs

· Knowledge of legislation pertaining to children and families, ability to recognize child protection issues and of reporting procedures

· Knowledge of issues related to maternal-child health

· Computer skills, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel

· Good team building and organizational skills, ability to make decisions quickly in difficult situations

· Respect for families on a limited income and sensitivity to their issues

· Responsive to the needs of a multi-cultural and diverse community

· Respect for and maintenance of confidentiality

· Ability to work independently

· Knowledge of nutrition issues Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing, in a cross-cultural environment

· Interpersonal and relationship-building skills

· Experience with kitchen operations and equipment

· Knowledge of foods and nutrition particularly in relation to food security

CONDTIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

· Willingness to work flexible hours

· Car and valid driver's license- this is non-negotiable you must have a vehicle to travel between sites and pick up food for programs etc. please do not apply if you do not have a current driver's license or a vehicle.

· Vulnerable sector criminal records check

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: $23.28 per hour
