Kamloops Aboriginal Friendship Society (KAFS) was established in 1972 and is a non-profit organization with a status free open-door policy. KAFS is dedicated to empowering the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities of Kamloops and surrounding areas. KAFS provides culturally appropriate programs and inclusive services that meet the needs of urban Indigenous people to become healthier, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
THE OPPORTUNITY:
Reporting to the Family Service Manager, the Youth Worker is responsible for providing culturally grounded support, mentorship, and advocacy to Urban Indigenous youth ages 13 to 18. This role focuses on engaging high-risk youth, fostering positive relationships, and encouraging participation in recreational, educational, cultural, and skill-building opportunities offered through KAFS. The Youth Worker will guide youth in accessing community resources, promote healthy development, and support them in navigating social, educational, and personal challenges
A DAY IN THE LIFE – ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Youth Engagement and Support
- Develop and maintain supportive and trusting relationships with youth at risk.
- Encourage youth participation in cultural, social, recreational, and educational programming at KAFS.
- Provide one to one support, mentorship, and positive role modeling that reinforces healthy behaviours and decision-making.
- Assist youth in accessing information and resources related to education, employment, wellness services, and community opportunities.
- Support youth in crisis through trauma-informed approaches and refer to external supports when required.
- Facilitate workshops and youth gatherings focused on cultural learning, well-being, life skills, and peer connection.
- Foster a safe, inclusive, and culturally respectful environment for all youth participants.
Program Coordination and Recreation
- Plan, organize, and deliver youth recreational activities, including community outings, cultural events, and educational sessions.
- Coordinate monthly activity schedules that respond to youth interests and needs.
- Support youth in resume writing, job readiness, and skill-building activities.
- Lead traditional sharing circles, cultural craft sessions, and information workshops.
- Organize and participate in fundraising initiatives and field trips that enhance youth engagement.
- Maintain awareness of traditional Aboriginal games, practices, and teachings to incorporate into programming.
Collaboration and Reporting
- Work collaboratively with other Youth Workers to provide advocacy, crisis intervention, outreach, and community networking.
- Build and sustain relationships with external partners to enhance supports available to youth.
- Attend meetings for youth at risk and provide updates while maintaining confidentiality.
- Ensure all reporting meets Ministry of Children and Family Development standards.
- Prepare monthly reports for the Family Service Manager and maintain accurate documentation and case notes for all youth interactions.
- Participate in team meetings, case reviews, and interdisciplinary planning to support integrated youth services.
- Work with other KAFS departments to support holistic service delivery.
Education and Experience
- Degree, diploma, or certificate in Social Services or a related human services field.
- Three or more years of experience working with high-risk youth, with experience supporting Indigenous youth and their families.
Knowledge
- Understanding of Aboriginal cultural values, teachings, and traditional practices.
- Awareness of community resources and supports for youth, including pathways related to substance use, crisis intervention, and referrals.
- Knowledge of youth development, mentoring principles, and the needs of high-risk youth.
- Experience planning and coordinating recreational and cultural activities for youth.
Skills and Abilities
- Outgoing and approachable, with the ability to build rapport and communicate effectively with youth.
- Strong team player with the ability to collaborate across programs.
- Skilled in conflict resolution, advocacy, and one to one support.
- Strong documentation, organization, and report writing skills.
- Ability to facilitate workshops, meetings, circles, and group activities.
- Computer proficiency, including MS Office programs.
- Ability to supervise and guide youth in structured and unstructured environments.
- Sound judgement, problem solving, and the ability to remain calm in dynamic or high-pressure situations.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Clearance.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.

- Compensation: $26.00 to $29.00 per hour, based on skill set and experience.
