Responsibilities

This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

As per HRM Directive 518, this employment opportunity is restricted to Nunavut Inuit only.

Reporting to the Supervisor Family Wellness, the Family resource Worker will work as a support to the Family Services office in close contact with the Community Social Worker and other community resources to coordinate prevention programs for families, children, youth, elders and the community as a whole. Much of the work will be completed within isolated communities with limited support.  The ability to work with and support other disciplines in promoting the overall health of both the family and community will be a vital part of the incumbent's role as a community social services worker. 

Family Resource Workers are at the core of "family-centered" community practice where daily interventions include foster parent support, child welfare interventions, counseling, youth support, elder support as well as family violence interventions and liaising with schools and other service providers.  The Family Resource Worker role will complement and support the role of existing Social Workers. 

Experience working with families, children, elders and youth and basic counselling, group facilitation, events planning and coordination skills will be required to be successful in this position.  Knowledge of and experience implementing programs based on Inuit Societal Values will be beneficial.  Strong record-keeping and report writing skills along with knowledge of MS Office Programs (i.e. spreadsheets, word-processing, presentation software and email) will be required. Interpersonal and conflict resolution skills will be required. Strong English writing and oral skills are required, Inuktut language will vary by region. 

Qualifications

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are obtained through a minimum grade 12 with 2 years related experience.  Applied Suicide Intervention Training (ASSIST) or ability to complete training within six months from date of hire. Human Resource Services Diploma or Social Services Worker Diploma or related certificate would be an asset. Valid Class 5 Drivers License.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut, English and French. 

Fluency in more than one of Nunavut's official language is an asset.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered. 

Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.
