What this role is all about:

Under broad managerial direction, the Senior Database Administrator is responsible for the implementation, configuration, maintenance, and performance of SQL Server databases. This role ensures high levels of data quality, availability, and security across all environments—Production, Development, and QA. The incumbent will also define and oversee database policies, architecture standards, and Business Continuity Planning (BCP).

This role is open to hybrid working arrangements within British Columbia.

What you'll do:

Environment Management and Availability

  • Install, configure, and maintain SQL Server environments across Production, Development, and QA.

  • Ensure environments are aligned with Beem's infrastructure standards and security protocols.

  • Implement high-availability solutions such as clustering, replication, and failover mechanisms.

Performance and Optimization

  • Monitor database performance using tools and scripts.
  • Identify bottlenecks and implement tuning strategies to improve query efficiency and system responsiveness.
  • Support data modeling, normalization, and indexing strategies for optimal performance.

Data Integrity, Security, and Compliance

  • Design and enforce policies for data validation, consistency, and redundancy.

  • Define and manage user roles, permissions, and authentication protocols.

  • Conduct regular audits and vulnerability assessments to ensure compliance with Beem's data governance policies.

  • Ensure databases meet regulatory and internal compliance standards (e.g., PIPEDA, SOC 2).

  • Prepare documentation and reports for internal and external audits.

Backup and Disaster Recovery

  • Develop and maintain backup strategies and recovery plans.

  • Test disaster recovery procedures regularly to ensure minimal downtime and data loss.

Database Design and Development

  • Collaborate with application developers and business analysts to design scalable database schemas.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation for database configurations, procedures, and metadata.
  • Establish and promote best practices for database development and administration.

Collaboration, Leadership, and Support

  • Work closely with Enterprise Data, Digital Solutions, IT infrastructure, cybersecurity, and other application teams to support enterprise systems.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior DBAs and developers.
  • Lead database-related initiatives such as migrations, upgrades, and integrations.
  • Coordinate with project managers to ensure timely delivery and alignment with business goals.

What you'll bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field; Master's preferred.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in database administration.
  • Proficiency in SQL Server; experience with Oracle, MySQL, or MongoDB is a plus.
  • Experience with Azure Data assets is a plus
  • Strong knowledge of database programming (SQL, T-SQL, PL/SQL).
  • Experience with data modeling, schema design, and normalization.
  • Familiarity with backup/recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery technologies.
  • Expertise in database security and performance tuning.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Adaptability to evolving technologies and environments.

Compensation 

Annual salary range: $95,500 - $110,000
