37.5 hours (core hours 9am-3pm Mon-Fri)

Northern Region, BC - Onsite

About The Role
As Environmental Health Officer, you will lead the implementation, assessment, and evaluation of environmental public health programs and services. Your work will encompass critical areas such as communicable disease control, drinking water safety, health and housing, food safety, solid waste management, and public building safety. You will also contribute to emergency preparedness and response, risk assessments, research on environmental contaminants, wastewater management, and pest control. Your work will help create healthier, safer environments that support the well-being of First Nations communities across the region.

About You
To be successful in this role you will have/be –

Education

  • A Bachelor of Technology Degree in Environmental Health or Public Health Inspection, recognized by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
  • 6 months of related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Occupational Certification

  • A certificate in Public Health Inspection granted by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
  • Certifications such as Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Onsite Wastewater Management, CSA Playground Inspector, and Small Water System Operation.

Knowledge

  • Comprehensive knowledge of First Nations traditions, cultural principles, leadership structures, community infrastructure, traditional health practices, and protocols, with the ability to model and respect these in professional settings.
  • Understanding of relevant legislation, guidelines, standards, and policies in environmental public health and their application to First Nations communities.
  • Expertise in environmental public health theories, concepts, and principles, including occupational health and safety practices and the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Proficiency in communication, negotiation, consultation, and adult education methods, with the ability to provide training and problem-solving support.
  • Familiarity with Provincial Health Ministries, Regional Health Authorities, and specialized laboratories, along with knowledge of electronic information systems for data management, analysis, and reporting.

Competencies

  • Ability to read, interpret, and synthesize scientific literature, laboratory analyses, and environmental public health data to identify hazards and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Strong analytical skills to evaluate technical and scientific reports, providing clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including public speaking and the ability to translate complex information into general terms.
  • Proficiency in operating field equipment and detecting environmental contaminants.
  • Skilled in problem-solving, negotiation, and conflict resolution to address challenges effectively.
