What you can expect from this position:
Reporting to the Manager, Occupational Health and Safety, the Officer, Occupational Health and Safety is responsible for proactively inspecting all workplaces to identify hazards and compliance gaps. Key duties include documenting findings, preparing reports, and meticulously tracking corrective actions to ensure timely and sustainable safety improvements are made by management. This role also involves analyzing incident data to identify safety trends, propose proactive solutions, and assist with formal audits and regulatory compliance checks.

As an Officer, Occupational Health and Safety, you will:

  • Manage the entire WSIB claims process, ensuring all required documentation (e.g., submission of form 7) is completed and filed with appropriate stakeholders in a timely manner.
  • Maintain WSIB case files, capturing and inputting data while promptly responding to all inquiries regarding the progress or status of injuries or claims.
  • Support return-to-work and accommodation programs by collaborating with HR and area managers and supervisors.
  • Support the creation and maintenance of all OHS Management System elements (manuals, policies, procedures, tools, and training).
  • Administer the OHSMS incident database, including incident entry, data verification, regular audits, and providing feedback for system optimization.
  • Investigate events leading up to an injury with functional managers to determine root cause and ensure the timely submission of corrective actions.
  • Conduct ergonomic assessments and provide recommendations to prevent musculoskeletal injuries.
  • Draft Policy for the OHSMS Program Manual, assisting in its development through research and benchmarking.
  • Facilitate the OHS Committees by acting as Secretary for both the Workplace and Policy committees, and managing all associated administration documents (Agendas, Minutes, Meetings Requests).
  • Coordinate and participate in continuous improvement projects, collaborating with business unit stakeholders to develop and enhance OHSMS processes.
  • Facilitate and conduct regular workplace inspections and audits to identify hazards, ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, and promote a safe work environment.
  • Provide health and safety training, education, and awareness sessions for employees and contractors.
  • Participate in the development and delivery of safety communications (e.g., bulletins, alerts, toolbox talks) to raise awareness of hazards and preventive measures.

This unionized position is classified at the Band 6 level, with an hourly wage of $42.97, based on a 37.5 hour work week. Testing will be administered as a part of the competitive process.

This is the role for you, if you have:

  • Minimum one (1) year of relevant administrative experience in a progressively responsible Human Resources/Health and Safety support role.
  • Relevant designation or actively working towards one (e.g., CRST or CRSP) would be considered a strong asset.
  • Experience working in a customer centric environment.
  • Experience with Safety Management Systems or WSIB administration.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to work in a changing environment.
  • Strong relationship building skills with a proactive approach to delivering high quality customer service.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail, accuracy and solution based thinking.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
  • High level proficiency with Microsoft Office suite products such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, Power BI.
  • Valid class "G" Ontario Driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain a "D/A" level Airside Vehicle Operator's Permit within 6 months of appointment to the position.
  • Post-secondary education (degree or diploma) with subsequent graduate work in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), Human Resources (HR), or Disability Management.
  • Ability to obtain and retain a Transportation Security Clearance.

Knowledge and Skills, you bring, that set you up for success:

  • In depth knowledge of applicable legislation and regulations associate with OHS.
  • Strong knowledge of Canada Labour Code part II, Management Systems, Ontario Health & Safety Act, applicable standards, regulations, prescribed guidelines, or best industry practices.
  • Knowledge of investigative, inspection and audit techniques and practices.
  • Knowledge of aerodrome operating procedures and related safety & security requirements.
  • Experience in specialized inspections and safety management software, etc.
  • Knowledge of Management Systems processes.
  • Ability to research best practices inside and outside of aviation and adjust accordingly to meet the needs of the safety program.
  • Knowledge of GTAA Safety Program and Safety Standards.
  • Ability to maintain concentration and attention to detail, especially in critical safety areas where care and judgement are essential.
  • Ability to work independently to prioritize work accordingly, when required.
  • Ability to analyse audit evidence to develop findings and comprehensive audit reports.
  • Ability to work and drive airside and obtain DA/AVOP.
