POSITION: Assistant Manager, Wild Animal Rehabilitation Center
STATUS: Permanent; Full-Time with benefits
SHIFT: 35 hours per week - Thursday to Monday (includes weekend days for full management coverage)
LOCATION: Wild ARC in Victoria, BC
CLASSIFICATION: Exempt
WAGE: Salaried

About the Position:
The Assistant Manager acts as second in command at the Centre and acts on behalf of the Centre Manager during periods of absence. This position is primarily responsible for managing the Wild ARC volunteer program, acting as the online communications liaison for wildlife-related webpages and social media, maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and supporting the BC SPCA's strategic directions at a local level. This position supports the Centre Manager in fulfilling the fundamental requirements of their role and meeting the annual targets and goals for Wild ARC.
Some specific duties:Duties Related to People Care (60%):
- Responsible for the recruitment, orientation, training, supervision, scheduling and recognition of volunteers (including volunteer practicum students) within the BC SPCA's approved recruitment process.
- Works with Volunteer Resources to ensure BC SPCA volunteer policies and protocols are deployed;
- Develops and implements strategies to recruit volunteers based on needs of the Centre and community demographics, with the support of Volunteer Resources.
- Provides feedback, coaching and mentorship to volunteers to ensure objectives and goals are met.
- Supports volunteer development through sourcing appropriate development opportunities.
- Creates and maintains annual volunteer training manual for approval by the Centre Manager.
- Ensures that a current volunteer database is maintained through "Better Impact" for the purposes of communicating with volunteers, scheduling, and tracking volunteer output.
- Develops and distributes regular communications to volunteers with input from the Centre Manager and Senior Wildlife Rehabilitator.
- Assists the Centre Manager in providing on-going training, direction, motivation, and coaching to staff. Assists with performance reviews and performance management as directed by the Centre Manager.
- Celebrates individual and team successes for both staff and volunteers; strives to create and maintain a positive, supportive and engaged workplace culture.
- Acts as a champion for health, safety and wellness in the Centre.
- Acts as an ambassador of new programs, policies and procedures.
- Builds relationships with other key parties in the organization and facilitates interactions that enhance trust including but not limited to special volunteer committees for wild animal humane education and outreach.
Duties Related to Communication (25%):
- Replies to customer inquiries in a courteous, efficient and professional manner providing a high level of personalized customer service and assists in resolving escalated customer service complaints in a timely manner.
- Assists Centre Manager in ensuring effective customer relations and public image.
- Provides input and support to developing Wild ARC communications and media in collaboration with the Centre Manager and Wild Animal Welfare and Communications teams, including wildlife webpages, WildSense e-newsletter stories, Metchosin Muse content, medical emergencies, social media content/page management, and other news items.
- Maintains phone systems with seasonal messaging updates and supervises web cameras.
Duties Related to Financial/Administrative Tasks (10%):
- Maintains records related to volunteer program including finances, training, health and safety documentation, and updates to animal care procedures.
- Supports Centre Manager in administrative functions such as inventory, staff recruitment, scheduling, payroll when Centre Manager is away, supply orders, and completion of financial paperwork as requested in a timely manner.
- Assists Centre Manager in complying with revenues and expense targets within the approved branch budget on an ongoing basis.
- Supports Centre Manager in additional fundraising and/or community engagement activities, primarily as it relates to ensuring adequate volunteer support for these activities.
- Assists Centre Manager with facility maintenance and contractor services; ensuring buildings, equipment, supplies are maintained and in a condition acceptable to the BC SPCA
Duties Related to Animal Care/Management (5%):
- Assists the Centre Manager in attaining and maintaining optimum welfare standards at all times as defined by IWRC/NWRA standards for wildlife rehabilitation, Wild ARC Capacity standard operating procedures (SOP) and implementation of all related BC SPCA policies.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications you need to have:
- Post-Secondary Education in a related field plus a minimum of 3-5 years' related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the employer.
- Related experience includes, but is not limited to:
- Formal supervision;
- Volunteer coordination/management/training;
- Working in animal welfare, with preference of wild animal experience;
- Working in the non-profit sector;
- Application/communication of wildlife legislation and regulations;
- Working in a unionized environment;
- Creating content for a website, newsletter, and social media; and
- Customer service.
- Genuine compassion for animals and demonstrable interest in wild animal welfare.
- Must be able to work with minimum supervision.
- Ability to prioritize demands and deliver effective results on time.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal skills and genuine desire/ability to work with a diverse range of people in a positive and respectful manner.
- Public speaking skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and administrative skills to answer emails, phones, generate reports and update records.
- Ability to work flexible hours (i.e., evening, weekend and holidays)
- Must be able to lift 40 pounds; willingness to be vaccinated for zoonotic diseases applicable to the worksite.
- Familiarity of B.C. wildlife natural history and related animal welfare standards (IWRC/NWRA) preferred.
- Valid Class N or 5 BC Drivers' License and driver's abstract
- Working knowledge of the concepts of equity, diversity, inclusion and reconciliation.
- Philosophical harmony with the vision, mission and strategic directions of the BC SPCA
