Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Transportation Services, the Infrastructure Technician will assist the Director with many aspects of the Department and be responsible for pre-engineering surveys, drafting/design, contract preparation and administration, construction inspection, and Asset Management / GPS data collection and reporting.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong foundation in engineering principles, particularly related to drainage and stormwater systems. Key qualifications include:

  • Basic knowledge of construction project management, with a focus on Municipal Drains, drainage systems, stormwater management, and municipal infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with engineering theories, techniques, procedures, and higher-level mathematics.
  • Familiar with water and sewer network design and analysis.
  • Proficiency in writing and testing computer programs, and practical experience with software applications such as Microsoft Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint, Outlook, ArcView, and AutoCAD.
  • Competence in reading engineering plans, specifications, and reports, with a willingness to perform site work and extended periods of data entry.
  • Physical ability to perform various in-house and field tasks such as, road and bridge rehabilitation projects, designs, surveying, construction and maintenance.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and analytical skills, sound judgment, and the ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact tactfully and assertively with colleagues, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Valid Ontario unrestricted G-class driver's license with no more than 6 demerit points.
  • Minimum of two (2) to five (5) years of relevant experience, including co-op or internship experience in drainage, stormwater, or civil infrastructure.
  • Completion of post-secondary education, or college/university in civil, environmental, or a related engineering program.

Position Responsibilities:

The Infrastructure Technician will support the design, maintenance, and administration of municipal drainage and stormwater systems. Key responsibilities include:

  • Assist the director in conducting fieldwork to inspect and assess drainage systems. Tasks include visual surveys, data collection, taking photographs, and maintaining accurate records.
  • Assist in preparing municipal drain apportionment calculations for use in billing drain maintenance.
  • Conduct audits, analyze data, and prepare comprehensive records on drainage and stormwater infrastructure.
  • Work with sensitive process and analytical instruments.
  • Assist in sampling stormwater ponds and reviewing sample results to be inputted into the Stormwater Infrastructure annual report to the MECP.
  • Review and digitize documentation related to drainage and stormwater systems.
  • Monitor and identify potential issues within drainage systems to prevent costly repairs.
  • Calculate simple quantities and perform engineering-related computations as required.
  • Operate vehicles such as cars and small trucks for site visits and inspections.
  • Work in both office and field settings, including construction sites, with adherence to safety protocols.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, stakeholders, and the public through presentations and meetings.
  • Enter and manage data related to drainage and stormwater infrastructure for extended periods.
  • Other duties as assigned.
