Position Summary
The Youth Program Assistant supports the delivery of after-school and youth programming for urban Indigenous children and youth. This role assists with daily program activities, snack preparation, supervision, and maintaining a safe, welcoming and culturally respectful space. The Youth Program Assistant works closely with the Youth Program Coordinator to support community-based programming both within the centre and in the community.
This position is well-suited for someone who enjoys hands-on work, building positive relationships with youth, and contributing to a supportive team-based environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the planning and delivery of youth and teen programming including recreational, cultural and physical activities.
- Prepare and serve after-school snacks following food safety guidelines.
- Supervise and engage youth in a safe, respectful and supportive manner.
- Support off-site activities and outings including accompanying youth into the community.
- Maintain clean, organized, and welcoming program spaces including dishes, set-up and clean-up.
- Support program set-up and take-down for activities and events.
- Model positive behaviour, foster a sense of belonging and respect among participants.
- Follow all organizational policies including safety, confidentiality and child protection guidelines.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience working with children or youth.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities or in a community-based setting.
- Ability to participate in physical activities and perform hands-on tasks.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Reliable, flexible, and able to work as part of a team.
- Understanding of (or willingness to learn about) cultural safety and trauma-informed practice.
- A valid Class 5 driver's license is not required but considered an asset.
Working Conditions
- Part-time hours averaging 10–15 hours per week.
- Work takes place both indoors at the centre and at off-site community locations.
- Position may involve physical activity, standing for extended periods, lifting supplies, and active participation in youth programming.
