ENERGY CREDIT ANALYST

The Credit Analyst is responsible for managing credit risk across the energy retail portfolio, including prudential obligations with distribution companies, suppliers, and market operators. This role ensures the company maintains adequate credit support, monitors exposure, and mitigates financial risk associated with counterparties.

Know-How

Practical/ Technical Knowledge

· Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or a related field; CPA or CFA designation is considered an asset.

·
Minimum 3 years of experience in credit risk management,
preferably in the energy or commodities sector.

· Strong understanding of financial statements, credit analysis techniques, and risk management frameworks.

· Familiarity with Alberta's energy market structure and prudential requirements is preferred.

· Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.

Planning, Organizing and Integrating

· Advanced MS Excel user, skilled at data manipulation, formulas, and pivot table analysis.

· Skilled at condensing large and complex sources of information into succinct and easily understood documents, such as a one-page briefing note.

· Must exhibit a strong attention to detail and accuracy.

· Must be willing to learn and understand new and/or complex information in a timely manner.

· Highly organized with solid time management skills and the ability to prioritize effectively.

Communicating and Influencing Skills

· Skilled at creating visually appealing PowerPoint presentations and slides from data.

· Must be able to work effectively with others and have good interpersonal skills.

· Must be willing to accept responsibility and to show good judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness.

Responsibilities

Prudential & Collateral Management

· Manage prudential obligations with utilities, Independent System Operators (ISOs), and wholesale suppliers.

· Coordinate the issuance and maintenance of credit support instruments such as letters of credit, parental guarantees, and cash collateral.

· Track and report on collateral balances and ensure compliance with contractual and regulatory requirements.

Credit Risk Assessment & Monitoring

· Evaluate the creditworthiness of counterparties and customers using financial analysis and credit scoring methodologies.

· Monitor mark-to-market (MTM) exposure and aggregate credit risk across contracts and counterparties.

· Recommend and enforce credit limits, collateral requirements, and risk mitigation strategies.

· Maintain and update internal credit policies and procedures in alignment with market and regulatory changes.

Contract & Stakeholder Support

· Support contract negotiations by advising on credit terms and risk exposure.

· Collaborate with legal, finance, and commercial teams to ensure credit provisions are appropriately structured.

· Liaise with counterparties to resolve credit-related issues and maintain strong working relationships.

Reporting & Compliance

· Prepare regular reports on credit exposure, counterparty risk, and prudential positions for senior management.

· Support internal audits and compliance reviews related to credit risk and financial assurance.

· Ensure accuracy and currency of key business systems, including CRM platform.

· Contribute to enterprise risk management initiatives and cross-functional risk assessments.
