Position Summary
The Policy and Research Officer will support initiatives that strengthen Indigenous economic development through evidence-based advocacy, stakeholder engagement, and knowledge creation. This position contributes to advancing Indigenous entrepreneurship, community prosperity, and self-determination by conducting policy analysis, research, and strategic communications that align with NACCA's mission.
Designed for an emerging professional, this role provides the opportunity to apply research and analytical skills in support of reconciliation, Indigenous business development, and advocacy with the federal government. The Policy and Research Officer will assist in developing policy briefs, synthesizing research, coordinating with key stakeholders, and supporting engagement with Indigenous communities, financial institutions, and government partners.
Key Responsibilities
Policy Analysis and Development
- Research and analyze issues affecting Indigenous economic development (e.g., entrepreneurship, procurement, workforce, capital access).
- Draft policy documents reflecting Indigenous perspectives and priorities.
- Track and assess relevant policy developments from various governments.
Research and Knowledge Gathering
- Collect and analyze data on Indigenous business trends, challenges, and opportunities.
- Support research initiatives including literature and environmental scans.
- Help design culturally appropriate community-based research tools (e.g., surveys, interviews).
- Monitor media for relevant policy updates and stakeholder positions.
Stakeholder and Community Engagement
- Support planning and coordination of meetings, consultations, and roundtables.
- Maintain records of policy actions and outcomes.
- Foster respectful, collaborative relationships with Indigenous partners and stakeholders.
Internal Collaboration
- Collaborate with senior staff to align research with organizational goals.
- Maintain internal knowledge systems (e.g., research databases, policy libraries).
- Contribute to presentations and materials for advocacy and program development.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Policy, Indigenous Studies, Economics, or a related field.
Experience
- 2-3 years of experience in a government relations or policy advisory role with a strong focus on Indigenous government programs and processes.
- Experience in policy research or analysis, preferably in Indigenous or government contexts.
- Familiarity with Indigenous economic development and government policy processes.
Abilities, Knowledge & Skills
- Research: Able to conduct literature reviews, policy scans, and synthesize findings.
- Communication: Clear writing and presentation of policy briefs and reports.
- Collaboration: Works effectively with internal teams and Indigenous partners.
