Empringham Disposal is a growing local waste and recycling company serving communities across Central Alberta. Since 2012, we have remained 100% locally owned and operated, committed to delivering reliable, community‑focused service. Our team provides a full range of solid waste and recycling solutions, including municipal collection, roll‑off container service, commercial front‑load programs, and waste transfer operations.

Position Summary

The Operations Supervisor provides day-to-day direction and support to drivers, equipment operators, and other frontline staff. This position oversees day‑to‑day personnel management, including timecard validation, performance oversight, and personnel recommendations. A strong focus on safety is essential, as the supervisor maintains and ensures full compliance with the company's health and safety program, ensuring alignment with provincial and federal regulations and supporting the company's Alberta Certificate of Recognition (COR). This includes acting as a point of contact for the Workers Compensation Board and other regulatory bodies, as well as conducting regular facility inspections to identify and address potential hazards.

The Operations Supervisor provides hands‑on operational support, including coordination with the mechanic team, vehicle shuttling, parts pickup, and performing side load, roll‑off, and front‑load collection when required. They support continuous improvement initiatives that enhance operational efficiency and service quality

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, coaching, and mentoring to all direct reports, including all drivers and equipment operators at Empringham Disposal.
  • Review and validate employee timecards and submit approved hours for payroll processing.
  • Recommend personnel actions such as training, hiring, promotions, and terminations.
  • Enforce staff compliance with all components of the company's health and safety program.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and service quality.
  • Dispatch and routing support and backup as required
  • Assist with coordination of the mechanic team, including shuttling vehicles, picking up parts, and providing general operational support.
  • Perform side load, roll‑off, and front‑load garbage collection as required, including emergency swing‑driver coverage and training support.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of Empringham Disposal's health and safety program, ensuring policies and procedures meet or exceed all applicable provincial and federal regulations and requirements for maintaining the Alberta Certificate of Recognition (COR).
  • Serve as a contact with the Workers Compensation Board and other health and safety regulatory bodies.
  • Conduct regular inspections of company facilities to identify, report, and address existing or potential health and safety risks.

Education and Experience

  • Post‑secondary education in business, operations, logistics, OHS, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3–5 years in operations, transportation, waste management, or similar environment, including 1–2 years in a supervisory role.
  • Experience with driver supervision, dispatching, routing, or fleet operations is an asset.
  • Strong background in health and safety, regulatory compliance, and incident management.
  • Knowledge of WCB processes, claims, or regulatory reporting is an advantage.
  • Comfortable in a fast‑paced, hands‑on operational setting with shifting priorities.
  • Valid Class 5 licence required; Class 3 or 1 considered an asset.
  • Experience in waste collection, heavy equipment, or municipal services is beneficial but not mandatory.

Additional Skills

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and industry software (AMCS, WorkHub) or able to learn quickly
  • Strong leadership abilities, with the capacity to motivate, coach and develop frontline staff
  • Effective, professional communication with internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent organization, time‑management, and attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion
  • Strong decision‑making and problem‑solving skills in fast‑paced environments
  • Solid understanding of workplace health and safety, including hazard identification and incident response
  • Able to interpret and apply policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
  • Customer‑service oriented with a focus on issue resolution and relationship building
  • Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with equipment operations (asset)
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, demonstrating initiative and accountability.
  • Comfort with hands‑on operational duties when required, willingness to take on varied tasks.
  • Steel toed boots are required
  • This is considered a safety-sensitive position
