Description
The Position
Uplight is
creating a new category of energy
. We make software that manages energy resources in homes and businesses—including things like smart thermostats, electric vehicles, solar panels, storage batteries, heat pumps, and even people's behavior—to generate, shift, or save energy to balance the grid, making it more efficient and reliable. This creates clean energy capacity that can be used by the power grid instead of burning more fossil fuels. Our solutions accelerate the transition to clean energy and save money for energy customers.
We are seeking a Data Engineer focusing on
data platform enablement
to support our mission and scale our impact
How You Will Make An Impact
As a Data Engineer at Uplight, you'll play a central role in designing and maintaining the infrastructure that ingests, transforms, and delivers data across our platform. Your work ensures that data systems are reliable, scalable, observable, and cost-efficient—forming the backbone of many customer-facing and data science-driven solutions.
You'll partner with cross-functional teams including analysts, product managers, and data scientists to ensure the platform meets the evolving needs of our business and our users.
What you get to do
- Design, build, and maintain platform components on Databricks Lakehouse, Spark, and Python that are reusable across multiple products and teams
- Develop orchestration, metadata management, lineage, and data quality frameworks that improve trust and velocity across the data ecosystem
- Build and support infrastructure for MLOps, including model registries, feature stores, and serving pipelines
- Partner with product engineers, analytics, and data science teams to provide scalable abstractions and self-service tooling
- Optimize storage, compute, and cost management strategies for big data workloads
- Drive platform automation through CI/CD, Infrastructure-as-Code, and observability practices
- Contribute to a remote-first engineering culture that values async-first communication, thoughtful design docs, and continuous improvement
What you bring to Uplight
- 2–5 years of software engineering experience, ideally in data infrastructure or platform roles
- Experience with Databricks, Spark, or similar big data platforms
- Proficiency in Python and SQL for platform and pipeline development
- Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, CircleCI, etc.)
- Strong system design skills and ability to think about scale, reliability, and cost trade-offs
- Collaborative mindset and strong communication skills—comfortable supporting other engineering teams and building tools they love
Bonus points
- Experience with streaming data systems (Kafka, Structured Streaming)
- Knowledge of data governance, access control, and compliance practices
- Experience tuning big data workloads for performance and cost efficiency
- Prior exposure to the utility or clean energy industry
Don't meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women, marginalized genders and people of color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. At Uplight we are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace, so if you're excited about this role but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyways. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
