Mount Pearl Newfoundland and Labrador AN R Canada GEMTEC Consulting Engineers and Scientists Limited. Full time $80,000 - $120,000 per year

Senior Aquatic Biologist

Are you an experienced Aquatic Biologist looking to progress your career? We're looking for Senior Aquatic Biologist to join our growing team. We are open to filling this position in our Mount Pearl NL, Halifax NS, Fredericton NB, Moncton NB, or Ottawa, ON office. The role will require travel to the Happy Valley Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador area.

At GEMTEC, we offer something different. We're an employee-owned, 400-person multidisciplinary consulting firm—not too big, not too small. We're large enough to compete head-to-head with publicly traded engineering giants, but still small enough to maintain the culture and flexibility of a close-knit team.

Our size and hands-on management style let us move quickly, embrace new opportunities, and empower our people to shape their own careers—without getting lost in corporate bureaucracy.

You're an ideal candidate if you have:

  • A passion for the outdoors and a proven ability to thrive in a challenging outdoor setting.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving in remote and rugged terrain.
  • An ownership mentality that treats each project as if it's building your own home
  • Resilience to work in adverse and changing environmental conditions and ability to make on-the-ground decisions.

A typical day on the job might look like:

  • Developing and overseeing comprehensive aquatic surveys designed to meet provincial and federal requirements.
  • Leading and coordinating aquatic field surveys including fish and mussel species and population level inventories, benthic invertebrates, water and sediment sampling, and habitat mapping.
  • Overseeing site characterization from an aquatic biology perspective and contributing to multidisciplinary discussions.
  • Undertaking necessary consultation / engagement with clients, regulators, sub-contractors, etc.
  • Contributing to project planning efforts in regard to bathymetry, substrate profiling, and aquatic-terrestrial impact assessments.
  • Guiding development of aquatic compensation strategies and site-level ecological enhancements.
  • Supervising and mentoring junior biologists in field techniques, data collection, and QA/QC procedures.
  • Preparing and reviewing aquatic baseline investigations, aquatic impact assessments, contribute to larger environmental assessments and other required regulatory submissions.
  • Maintaining a high standard of health, safety, and environmental compliance in all project activities.
  • Consulting and incorporating indigenous community stakeholders in program development, fieldwork, data  analysis, logistics, etc.
  • Other duties as required, depending on project needs

Educational & Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in aquatic biology, with a strong focus on program development, fieldwork, technical reporting and permitting.
  • Demonstrated experience leading aquatic assessments involving fish (freshwater), mussels, water quality, and habitat evaluations.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations and permitting processes (e.g., federal/provincial EA requirements, DFO, SAR, etc.).
  • Experience in compensation planning considered an asset.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; capable of preparing technical reports and engaging with stakeholders.
  • Experience leading and coordinating a team of biologists to undertake field surveys, data management and technical writing.
  • Experience with community statistical software is considered an asset.

The good stuff you get:

  • Fair pay plus extra: competitive salary with year-end profit-sharing bonus.
  • Complete health & dental coverage including vision, paramedical services, EFAP, Teladoc, and more
  • Retirement planning made easier with a 5% employer match on your contributions.
  • Paid time off (vacation and sick days).
