Detailed Overview
Under the administrative direction of the Manager, Clinical Operations, provides clinical leadership for Therapeutic Recreation Services by planning, implementing, and evaluating Therapeutic Recreation services in a variety of program and service areas in residential care. This position is responsible for the day-to-day and professional functions of the Therapeutic Recreation service. This includes preparing and adjusting work schedules, supervising designated staff, providing clinical guidance and advice. Provides clinical services to residents as required in accordance with the Therapeutic Recreation Standards of Practice. Reviews and develops policies, procedures and quality standards for Therapeutic Recreation clinical practice.
Responsibilities
- Coordinates the day-to-day therapeutic recreation activities to ensure optimal use of resources and efficient use of department staff by methods such as preparing staff work schedules and adjusting schedules according to workload, maintaining waitlists as per priority intervention criteria, facilitating resolutions to work problems, providing clinical guidance and advice. Ensures consistency of practice in Therapeutic Recreation for similar programs.
- Supervises designated staff by methods such as delegating work, conducting audits, participating in performance evaluations, assisting in planning staff training, development and orientation requirements and developing, organizing and implementing in-services and education programs for staff in collaboration with the Manager.
- Provides clinical services to residents by methods such as assessing and identifying problems, formulating goals, planning and implementing treatment plans for individuals and groups and collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team to determine optimal treatment plan. Utilizes a variety of intervention approaches including individual and group services. Organizes and provides food for programs and events for the residents as required.
- Records resident treatment programs and progress according to departmental and professional documentation standards and maintains staff documentation standards by methods such as reviewing staff charts and charting audits.
- Participates on interdisciplinary/interdepartmental and professional practice committees and in resident conferences by methods such as attending meetings, providing input and communicating needs and concerns related to issues including processes, equipment, patient care, quality and workload. Collaborates with members of the interdisciplinary team to facilitate the resolution of issues and advocates for the goals and objectives of services in accordance with Therapeutic Recreation standards and scope of clinical practice.
- Plans new and/or existing resident programs by methods such as identifying service needs requiring improvement/advancement, providing input to the Manager, collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team for feedback, making recommendations and assisting the Manager in evaluating and implementing these services.
- Reviews and develops policies, procedures and quality standards and/or activities related to Therapeutic Recreation clinical practice by methods such as identifying service needs, communicating with members of the interdisciplinary team for feedback, evaluating the results in collaboration with the Manager, maintaining manuals and advising staff members of revisions/additions as required.
- Promotes quality management activities related to Therapeutic Recreation clinical practice by methods such as monitoring and evaluating effect of changes in resident care practice and generating recommendations for alternative approaches in collaboration with members of the interdisciplinary team. Recommends changes to selected policies, procedures, treatment guidelines and protocols to the Manager.
- Ensures Therapeutic Recreation professional and support staff receive required training for the orientation and/or supervision of students and participates in student education and/or evaluations as required.
- Participates in the recruitment of new staff by methods such as acting as an interview panel member, developing interview questions and making recommendations to the Manager regarding hiring decisions.
- Provides education and in-service training to community agencies, residents, families and members of the interdisciplinary team as requested by methods such as researching topics, preparing documentation and presenting material to facilitate achievement of treatment goals. Attends/participates in departmental, hospital and/or regional educational programs as required.
- Maintains knowledge of current developments in evidence based Therapeutic Recreation practice by methods such as reviewing relevant literature, consulting with other professionals, attending relevant education programs and recommending new/changed applications to the Manager to enhance the delivery of patient care.
- Participates in the development of new programs and services by identifying service and needs. Contributes to the development of operational plans and goals and objectives.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation.
Three years recent related experience in Therapeutic Recreation including one year recent, related experience in a supervisory role or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Eligible for membership in the British Columbia Therapeutic Recreation Association.
Successful completion of Foodsafe Level 1.
Class IV BC Driver's Licence (restricted), as required.
