Red Deer, Alberta, Canada John Howard Society of Red Deer Full time

FULL TIME CASE WORKER, COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS

The Agency:

The John Howard Society of Red Deer is a non-profit organization working to promote community harmony through the advocation of human dignity and social justice. We support and serve those involved in the justice system through a restorative process and believe in treating every person with fairness, dignity and compassion while holding each person accountable for their own behavior.

The Program:

Horizon House is a community residential facility (CRF) that provides housing, support and supervision to federal offenders (male and female) upon their conditional release to the community. We work to successfully reintegrate offenders into the community, and to assess and mitigate risk during the process of reintegration.

The Position:

The full time Case Worker is responsible for independently managing a case load of 8-14 residents who are on conditional release from federal correctional penitentiaries. The candidate should be comfortable working with individuals who have committed a wide range of offences and with exploring and assessing risk factors, triggers and motivating factors related to the offending. The Case Worker will complete Resident Action Plans at the time of intake and meet individually with clients to assess both progress and risk; and to implement strategies to manage risk. They will review and grant/deny pass applications, track daily activities, and ensure that the residents are following their conditions as well as meeting the expectations of the program, and successfully reintegrating into the community.

The full time Case Worker will work as part of the Case Management Team to review inmate files and screen them for residency prior to intake. They will use the Offender Management System (OMS) to electronically review and share reports. The Case Worker will act as a mentor for Support Workers and will report directly to the Program Manager, as well as work closely with Correctional Services of Canada staff and other community stakeholders.

The successful candidate will be a mature and experienced individual with strong interpersonal communication skills, consistent boundaries and excellent reporting skills. They will be self-motivated and apt at tracking/meeting deadlines with minimal supervision. The full time Case Worker will have keen attention to detail and will work positively and professionally within a team atmosphere as well as on their own. They will take the incentive to support their colleagues and the CRF in all areas of the work: from assisting with clerical or housekeeping tasks to addressing confrontation and de-escalating potentially hostile situations, the Case Worker will be adaptable and posses a versatile skillset.

An understanding of the criminal justice system, Correctional Services of Canada, Community Based Residential Facilities as well as familiarity with mental health and addictions will be a great asset. Applicants with backgrounds/specialization in these areas or with Case Management experience will be given preference.
