Job Title: Construction Environmental Superintendent

Reporting directly to the Environmental Manager, the Construction Environmental Superintendent supports the implementation of environmental and sustainability requirements on the Eskay Mine site, with a particular focus on construction activities. This site-based role works across operations departments and is responsible for ensuring that activities are consistent with legislative requirements, permits, and other commitments made by Skeena.

The Construction Environmental Superintendent will oversee site construction operations to ensure full environmental compliance, support the Environmental Management System (EMS), and drive environmental initiatives. Working alongside the Environmental Compliance Superintendents, site operations, consultants. This role supports the Revitalization Project and helps deliver project agreements while fostering our ongoing relationship with the Tahltan Central Government.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

Team Leadership & Development 

  • Supports the Environmental Manager in development of the site construction environmental team including scheduling of activities, and effective resourcing to support the completion of required activities. 
  • Leads using an integrated approach providing technical guidance, coaching, mentoring, education and training for all site teams and site operations. 
  • Mentors and coaches environmental field crews, monitors, and consultants, including supporting strong field data collection skills.
  • Maintain accountability with internal and external team members on key deliverables to drive a performance-based culture.
  • Support implementation of project agreements, education, and training initiatives. 

Environmental Systems & Regulatory Compliance 

  • Coordinates and supports the EMS to manage environmental construction compliance, risks, and performance in alignment with permit requirements and ISO 14001 standards. 
  • Ensures adherence to regulatory requirements, permit conditions, environmental and social commitments, and compliance/sustainability assurance. 
  • Oversees site data and records management consistent with regulatory and company requirements.
  • Conducts compliance audits against permit, licence, and social obligation requirements. 

Operational Support  

  • Works collaboratively and proactively with the Operations team to enable site operations to proceed in line with legislative, permit, and other commitment requirements, on schedule and budget. 
  • Leads or coordinates regulatory and compliance reporting, including quarterly and annual submissions.
  • Performs analysis, interpretation, and communication of environmental data to support site management decisions.
  • Educates site departments on permit terms and how they relate to monitoring and reporting requirements. 

Environmental Programs & Emergency Preparedness 

  • Supports the implementation of the reclamation and closure plan and planning including reclamation research.
  • Develops work plans, schedules, leads field programs, and manages data interpretation and reporting.
  • Participates in environmental aspects of the site emergency preparedness and response planning. 
  • Other duties as required.

The Ideal Candidate
Education / Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree, diploma or recognized certificate program in a field related to regulatory approvals and/or directly relevant environmental discipline
  • Registered as a Qualified Professional, eligible, or working toward registration
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver's Licence

Experience / Skills

  • Minimum of 6 years' experience in site/operational construction environmental management, preferably in the mining sector, on comparable projects.
  • Broad-based experience with environmental aspects related to the mining industry, including but not limited to water quality, ESC, ML/ARD, construction environmental management, and contractor management
  • Demonstrated success implementing Environmental Management Systems, and compliance requirements across multi-discipline teams 
  • Experience in an environmental leadership role as a project owner/operator
  • Solid understanding of the BC and federal regulatory processes, and technical environmental studies as relevant to mining project development
  • Demonstrated capability and experience working with Indigenous governments/communities including history, protocols, values, and governance and implementing those values
  • Detail oriented with excessive attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Exhibits a high degree of responsibility for confidential matters
  • Effective team player who can jump in wherever is needed
  • Strong interpersonal and reasoning skills, with proven problem-solving abilities
  • Highly self-motivated with the ability to work independently as well as with others

Work Location & Conditions

This is a site-based camp job at Eskay Creek Mine site. This position involves working at a remote mine site on a 15 days on/13 days off rotation.     

The Eskay Creek Project is located within the Coast Mountains of Northwestern British Columbia and Tahltan Territory. Ground transportation will be provided from local communities to the Eskay Creek Site facilities. For those applicants located elsewhere in western Canada, flight transportation from major urban centers will be provided to the Terrace airport, from which shuttles will provide transportation to the Eskay Creek Camp facilities. Travel time and expenses are subject to Skeena's Travel Policy.    

There will be exposure to extreme temperatures in all seasons including working outdoors in snow, mud, ice, and water conditions, walking to and from different locations on uneven ground, prolonged periods of standing and physically handling/lifting/moving heavy objects.      

All Applicants MUST be legally entitled to work in Canada. Priority hiring consideration will be given to Indigenous Nations members who reside within the territories our projects are located.

Compensation

The expected salary range for this position is CA$100,000- CA$135,000, in line with the competitive job market for such roles carried out in British Columbia. Salary ranges are guidelines and any job offer received by a candidate will be determined on a number of factors such as relevant education, training, and/or experience.
