This position is currently part-time, but has potential to lead into a full time position.

Reporting to the Director of Mission, Ethics, Research, and Reconciliation, the Indigenous Advisor plays a vital role in advancing Good Samaritan's commitment to reconciliation, cultural safety, and relationship-building with Indigenous peoples. Rooted in our mission to follow in the footsteps of the Good Samaritan, extending Christian hospitality to people and communities in need, this role will:

  • Grow and strengthen respectful and reciprocal relationships with Indigenous partners, stakeholders, and communities.
  • Offer cultural guidance, advocacy, and support to Indigenous residents, in alignment to their practices and traditions.
  • To guide and support truth and reconciliation activities for staff and residents.
  • Support staff in delivering culturally safe, trauma-informed care.
  • Support and participate in the Indigenous Advisory Group and guide the organization's efforts to reflect the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action, especially those related to healthcare.

Education and Other Qualifications:

  • Lived experience as an Indigenous person (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit) is required
  • Post-secondary education in Indigenous Studies, Health, Social Work, Ethics, or a related field; equivalent lived and professional experience will be considered

Work Experience:

  • Experience in a health care organization preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations, or similar experience will be considered.
  • Proven experience in facilitation, community engagement, and relationship-building

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience and knowledge of Indigenous health and Indigenous Ways of Knowing
  • Effective interpersonal skills with an ability to deal effectively with conflict in a diplomatic and professional manner
  • Deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and worldviews
  • Adept at written and oral communication with internal and external stakeholders
  • Exhibit an open and sincere approach by demonstrating respect and compassion for everyone equally
  • Maintain an individual's dignity and self-worth during conversations
  • Excellent active listening skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and geographic locations
  • Knowledge of the healthcare and continuing care context in Alberta and BC considered an asset

  • A current and clear Criminal Records Check Form and if applicable a Vulnerable Sector Check that has been obtained no more than 90 calendar days prior to the hire date.
