What Your Day Will Look Like

As a Junior Archaeologist and Crew Lead, you will take on a leadership role in the field, guiding crews through archaeological excavations, surveys, and site assessments while ensuring work is conducted safely, efficiently, and to the highest professional standards. You will be responsible for mentoring and training entry-level staff in field techniques, documentation, and safety protocols, helping to foster a collaborative and productive team environment. Your role includes managing equipment, maintaining proper organization and records, and addressing day-to-day challenges as they arise. You'll also maintain regular communication with Field Directors, Permit Holders, and Project Managers, providing timely updates. This position offers a strong opportunity to build leadership experience while contributing to high-quality heritage resource management.

What You'll be Responsible for

  • Lead and supervise field crews on heritage resource projects (archaeological excavations, surveys, site assessments, etc.).
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the field crew, ensuring tasks are completed safely, on time, and to the highest professional standards.
  • Provide regular progress updates and reports as needed to Field Directors, Permit Holders, and Project Managers as required.
  • Ensure accurate and thorough recording of archaeological data, following permit/ project

methodologies.

  • Manage and maintain complete, legible, and well-organized field documentation and ensure that field notes and spatial data are uploaded promptly to meet project deadlines
  • Fostering positive relationships with local communities, Indigenous groups, governmental agencies and other partners.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to archaeology technicians within a team environment.
  • Promoting a strong safety culture and working collaboratively within Ecofor's corporate culture.

What Will Help You Succeed:

Our ideal candidate brings two to five years of experience in archaeological fieldwork, with a solid background in supervising crews and coordinating activities on surveys, excavations, and site assessments. You hold a degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field, and have either completed a recognized field school or gained equivalent practical training. You are a clear communicator with strong organizational and leadership skills, capable of guiding junior staff and ensuring work is completed safely and efficiently. You are confident handling field challenges, comfortable working in remote or physically demanding environments, and bring strong attention to detail in documentation and data collection.

  • Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology or a related field.
  • Two (2) to five (5) years' experience working in archaeology, with significant involvement in field work.
  • Previous experience leading or supervising field crews is strongly preferred.
  • Completion of a recognized field school program is preferred.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and protocols in archaeological fieldwork.
  • Familiarity with the provincial/territorial heritage assessment regulatory environment in British Columbia and/or Yukon, or other jurisdictions where Ecofor works as required.
  • Experience with handheld GPS units, mapping software, pedestrian survey, subsurface testing, excavation and systematic data collection and field note taking.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills, with the ability to motivate and guide field staff and address challenges.
  • Ability to work in challenging environmental conditions and physically demanding situations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in sometimes challenging situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to build respectful relationships with First Nations communities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to report findings clearly and accurately.

Position requires: Criminal Record Check, Valid Class 5 Driver's License

Language Requirement: Fluent in English

Wage Range: This is an Hourly position with atarget hiring range of $32.37 to $39.82 per hour. Final placement within this range will typically be between the minimum and midpoint and is determined based on each candidate's unique combination of skills, knowledge, experience, and abilities. We also consider factors such as market conditions and internal equity to support fair and transparent compensation practices.

Location: The successful candidates must reside in or be willing to move to one of the locations mentioned above.
