Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society (CVIMS) is a non-profit settlement organization located in Nanaimo, B.C., Canada. Established in 1979, CVIMS provides support to newcomers and refugees. Services include settlement, employment, family, language and community programs. We are client-driven and committed to being accessible and responsive to, as well as reflective of, our diverse community.
The Digital Communication and Engagement Specialist support CVIMS' vision of inclusive and diverse communities by amplifying newcomer voices, sharing community impact stories, and fostering meaningful connections between newcomers, Indigenous Peoples, and the broader community. The role leads the use of various digital media platforms to highlight the experiences of newcomers, program successes, and promote access and belonging in community. This position also develops and facilitates educational opportunities that create opportunities for social connection, enhanced intercultural competence, and transfer of knowledge for all participants.
Digital Communications & Outreach
- Develop and execute digital communication strategies to strengthen CVIMS' online presence and outreach efforts, ensuring alignment with CVIMS's goals and mission.
Collect and share stories about CVIMS programs and clients, Indigenous initiatives, intercultural activities, and community impacts to enhance online connection.
Ensure all communication materials adhere to CVIMS' visual identity, cultural safety principles, and equity, diversity and inclusion commitments.
- Regularly update and maintain the CVIMS website with accurate, accessible, and culturally sensitive information.
Create engaging multimedia content, including videos, podcasts, blogs, photos, and graphics, to amplify diverse voices and program impact.
Plan, schedule, and implement social media strategies that deliver consistent, inclusive messaging across platforms. Engage directly with followers to promote events and respond to comments.
- Create and design promotional materials including newsletters and event communications to increase awareness and attendance.
- Attend selected events to document and share culturally inclusive content through digital media channels.
Community Education & Facilitation
- Plan and facilitate professional workshops for CVIMS staff, volunteers, and the broader community that will enhance intercultural awareness, promote belonging, and provide opportunities to develop social connection.
- Develop and distribute educational resources, handouts, and digital content to promote anti-racism, cultural safety, and social inclusion.
- Track and report on the outcomes of educational initiatives ensuring newcomers, community members and Indigenous participants develop mutual connections and awareness in ways that respect sovereignty, knowledge systems and leadership.
Program Support and Administration
- Maintain an organized digital archive of all communication materials, including photos, videos, stories, and client consent forms and program documentation.
- Develop client-friendly program information sheets and accessible resources to support newcomers and community members.
- Track performance metrics from initiatives, providing data-driven insights for continuous improvement. Contribute to reports and funding submissions, highlighting CVIMS' success in engaging marginalized communities.
Follow CVIMS reporting protocols and assist in incident reporting. Attend and participate in all staff meetings and group trainings. Responsibilities may evolve in response to community needs and organizational priorities. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Team Lead or Director of CVIMS.
Bachelor's degree or diploma in digital marketing, journalism, communications, or a related discipline; relevant experience combined with education may be considered.
- 2+ years' experience in marketing or outreach including website development.
- Certification or 2+ years demonstrated experience using Meta for Business, Canva, video/podcast editing software, and WordPress.
- Attention to detail and creativity demonstrated through a portfolio submission is required.
- Superior interpersonal, collaboration and communication skills. Excellent spoken and written English required for professional communications, facilitation, and reporting.
- Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple projects with changing priorities.
- roficiency using client databases, Microsoft Office 365, Zoom, Teams, and other digital tools.
- Class 5 Driver's License and reliable transportation required due to regular travel.
- Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check required.
First Aid Level 1 required.
2+ years' work experience in EDI with strong knowledge of EDI principles and best practices.
- Experience facilitating group discussions, workshops, or community learning opportunities.
- Strong storytelling skills across digital formats (video, audio, written) for diverse audiences.
- Experience working with diverse and marginalized populations; experience working with immigrants and/or refugees is an asset.
- GBA+ certification or demonstrated applied experience an asset
- Fluency in a second language is an asset.
- Priority will be given to applications who are eligible to work in Canada for min 3 years.
Ability to work in alignment with CVIMS policies, values ad community-centered approach.
Travel within Nanaimo Regional District will be required. Occasional travel to locations in other parts of British Columbia and/or Canada for purposes like professional development, networking, or conferences may also be required
- Some work outside of regular office hours, including evenings and weekends, is required. Flex time schedules will be made to accommodate non-regular work hours. All overtime must be approved in advance
